The Last of Us Franchise - Because it's apparently a franchise now. This thread has been double-DMCA’d by Sony Interactive Entertainment.

Something that occurred to me is that a lot of people in this thread point out that TLOU 2 lets Abby go scot-free and the player has absolutely no say in how it plays out. Thing is, there is a way to do that right. I recently played The Witcher 2, and at the climax of the game, the antagonist, Letho tells you his reasons for doing the things he did throughout the game, and it's revealed that he's not really a bad guy, just someone caught in a bad situation. Not to mention he actively helped Geralt's love interest out of respect for Geralt (both of them depending on your choices).

At this point you can either fight him to the death or you can let him go. You'll find that a lot of people preferred to let him go because they sympathized with him and felt that killing him would have been pointless after everything was said and done. But you can also kill him because he did assist in bringing about war (albeit not by his choice) and because it was his actions that caused Geralt to be in the same mess.

The key difference here isn't just that the player has the option of either killing or sparing Letho, it's also that Letho's a charismatic, well-written character to the point that it's a legitimately difficult choice. In essence, he is the complete opposite of Abby. Had Abby been written better and had she been likable on any conceivable level, I don't think people would have had a problem with Ellie letting her go. At least then, the themes of revenge might have had more impact since it'd be between two characters you grew to like constantly at each others throats for reasons they aren't able to justify.

Of course this would also require the entire game to be rewritten because it's thoroughly impossible to like Abby based solely on her actions.

Horizon Zero Dawn has a similar thing, though with significantly less emphasis - right when you start the "Proving" you meet a guy who has a Focus (basically Google Glass except not shit) and he's flighty as hell, dodging your questions. Later, after the Proving goes to shit because of cultists with machine guns killing most of the people there, you discover the guy was working with the cultists and seemingly marked Alloy (the player character) for death because she weirdly resembles this other woman who Alloy has never seen before.

Eventually you get to the town this dude lives in and find out where to track his ass down and kill him in the name of justice...but it also turns out he knows what he did to the point he can't sleep at night, and he did it unwillingly as the cultists have his wife and child hostage. The next mission is to actually confront him, where you do and he eagerly volunteers a lot of plot relevant detail about the cultists. Notably, he explicitly states that he isn't going to beg for his life - he knows what he did and understands if Alloy judges his life forfeit, all he asks is that she save his family from the cultists. If you don't kill him, Alloy still makes it clear that the dude has a lot to answer for and that by showing mercy, she expects him to dedicate his life to righting his wrongs - and then instructs him to meet her at some location so the first thing he'll do is help Alloy save his family from the cultists.

With Abby, I feel like it was a double whammy from the start - you have it where she's a serial killer just murdering people named Joel and she basically draws out the death of an old guy (who saved her life no less) with absolutely no remorse for her actions. If they'd simply removed the whole serial killer thing and then had her kill Joel with a single shot to the chest (especially given I bet Joel didn't take as long to kill her father), it would go a LONG way in making the character actually seem more like a person who saw a moment of opportunity to right a wrong, instead of just trivializing WHY she kills him in favor of just making Abby a murderous psychopath.

You say that as if there aren't people who, hand to fucking God, will argue with a straight face that Mulan is a story about a trans guy.

It was months ago, so I don't have links, but I remember a scrap on Tumblr where some Chinese person basically put their foot down and said "stop re-writing a classic Chinese story to fit your dumbass modern politics, it's about a woman pretending to be a man so she could serve in the army, Mulan is a WOMAN".

Context means nothing to these people.

It's all I can think about. Bravo Druckmann. Every time I see a golf club, any time someone mentions sandwiches or bigotry. Whenever someone calls their dog naughty. Whenever I see a buff woman. Oh god oh fuck, it won't stop. I don't even know if I want it to. Every time someone gets a head injury. There it is, TLOU2, playing on repeat in my head. I furiously masturbate to porn of Abby and Ellie constantly. Bravo Druckmann, you've bashed my life in with a golf club, and I love you for it. Everywhere I turn, I see lesbians. I ask every Asian child their pronouns. Fuck, every time I see a guitar I collapse and weep. You've ravaged me from behind Druckmann in a way that'd make Abby jealous. Every time I see a Jewish woman, I ask how far along her pregnancy is, and assure her it isn't mine. Every time I touch guitar strings, I'm reminded that you're pulling my heart by them, and I bite my friend's fingers in anxiety. Fuck, I walked down to the local synagogue and BEGGED them to trap me in it. Once stuck inside, I read the Torah religiously and gaslit my way into the faith! I asked the fucking stables if they'd paint a horse with invisible paint so I could appear to be flying.

TLOU2's spores have taken root in me and turned me into a zombie hungering for game references. Bravo Druckmann.

Only an honest death can cure you now.

Liberate you, from your wild curiousity.

There is something genuinely wrong with him, something like psychopathy, which is why I compared him to Ted Bundy earlier and Jame Gumb just now.

It's crazy how negative an opinion I have of him now, because before while I wouldn't have necessarily called myself a fan of his, I had no idea he was such a toxic little shit, I thought he was a talented guy who was responsible for good games like Uncharted 4 and the original Last of Us.

But what I didn't know about Uncharted 4 was how much of the game had already been conceived by Amy Henning, I thought it was all Druckmann's show, now I realize that whatever game he's credited in was good despite him and when he calls the shots something like Last of Us II is what we get.

It's disappointing because it does feed into the stereotype of Jews as parasitical, toxic influences on things, what with him driving all the other main talent out of Naughty Dog, ruining one of the all time great developers.

I don't know what, if anything, his Jewishness means, but that's clearly the elephant in the room, at the end of the day though his Jewishness doesn't matter, the fact that he's a psychopathic narcissist does, who are going to of course use every shield they can use to further their own needs.
I think he thinks of his Jewishness as an 'edge' to finally get into Hollywood like he's always wanted, hence the aggressive Jew pandering with the synagogue and Jewish character. But his psychopathy separates him from both G-d and his fellow Jews; in his heart, his god and his tribe are both Neil Druckmann, and Neil Druckmann shall have no other god before him. So he can't actually pander to Jews any better than he can to anyone else. Which is probably why he was never able to get into Hollywood to begin with, even the Hollyweirdoes can tell he's 'off' somehow.

If they only “transitioned” to escape being a child bride, are they even fucking trans? How’s that different from, say, Mulan, who pretends to be a man in order to join the military but doesn’t actually believe herself to be male?

A young girl who masquerades as a boy post-apocalypse in order to avoid unwanted attention is an interesting concept for a character, but of COURSE it’s fucking impossible to do in 2020 without inserting tranny politics.

Kind of unfortunate implications too. Are any of the other young girls in that tribe/community just okay with being child brides because they don't want to be boys?

He... he fucked himself? Literally?
This is both funny and quite sad.
Where's the reddit link?

I call bullshit. The actors did horrible violent scenes but a 30 second sex scene is somehow too much? Also contracts don't exist or what?

It's easy to claim that Dreckmann did such and such because angry gamers hate him. "An insider on reddit just said" is the same as "My uncle who works at Nintendo said".

Hey guys I'm also an insider! My entire family got enslaved by Naughty Dog during WW1. Dreckmann did the mocap for a now deleted scene where Abby fucks & eats a baby! And he used actual Babyies AND he fucked and ate them! He had to do it several times because he couldn't stop laughing.

Laura's saying the third pic in Nora's tweet is photoshopped.

...Photoshop tweet or not, if you want people to believe you:

Then, y'know: maybe you should delete the picture of you in a mocap suit with your face covered in capture dots alongside Neil in the recording studio so that maybe people don't get the wrong idea? Because otherwise, that's a really, REALLY bad look.

EDIT: I don't even understand why she's getting uppity over that Tweet in particular. Even if it was Photoshopped, and I'll give her the benefit of the doubt and say it was, what exactly is so damning about it that she felt the need to clarify it was fake? Even if she did do the scene like the Tweets' implying, nobody would care because they were most likely under contract, she wouldn't really have a choice in the matter; like, money is money. At least respect the hustle.

You don't even need dysphoria in the current year. You just say you are trans and demand people respect your pronouns as you trim your beard in the women's.

Genderspecial lunacy has caused being transgendered to become a random feels and attention whoring based state of being. Insisting you need dysphoria first is transphobic. People are whatever they say they are and homomes and surgery should be handed out like candy.

I'd think that in a post-apocalyptic world where survival is king, totally feeling like a cute girl in your ill-fitting party dress from the junior miss department is not gonna be a priority.

I mentioned earlier that I play this game like a mgsv where Snake just doesn’t give a shit and just murders everyone but there’s comparisons one can try to make between the games but where last of us 2 fails I think MGSV actually does better. A large portion of both games centers around revenge. Kaz and Snake want revenge on Skullface for the destruction of their unit and Ellie wants revenge for the death of her surrogate father and both even have an unsatisfying end to their revenge plots. In MGSV after fighting the bipedal robot Sahelanthropus Kaz and Snake find Skullface on the ground and finally get their chance. Grabbing Skullface’s open custom shotgun they blow off an arm and a leg taking back what Kaz had lost during the years Snake had been in his coma. When they have the chance to kill Skullface though, they stop and leave him. Ending his life wouldn’t be satisfying for either of them so they leave him to die. What makes it unsatisfying though is as they leave Huey Emmerich, a character revealed to be pretty much a shitbag and responsible for the destruction of MSF kills Skullface instead and floats about it, screaming about vengeance. It’s fake though, it’s an act, and neither Kaz nor Snake are happy about it. So when I played mgsv I shared their dissatisfaction. Here with Ellie just letting Abby go to fuck up another day is not only unsatisfying for the player but really for Ellie herself. Where Kaz and Snake move on with their lives Ellie seems like a broken miserable husk. The Phantom Pain even does killing people and feeling bad about it better. At a certain point there’s an outbreak of parasites among his new units the Diamond Dogs and to avoid infecting the world Snake has to go through and kill every infected member to put them out of their misery. The various soldiers either resign themselves to their fate, placing their life into your hands as “Big Boss” saluting you in their final moments or their so far gone that there’s nothing left to do but end them. In the Last of Us 2 you find out that the white guy with short brown hair was named Dylan and the person that cared about that has about three seconds to give a shit before their throat is stabbed by you because they’re actively hunting you to shoot you to death.

TLDR; MGSV, a game that I don’t think is even that great is still miles ahead of the Last of Us 2 in terms of its themes and its attempts to humanize people you kill.
