Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

If we go another week or so without a major spike in deaths, I’ll probably agree pretty strongly that the threat is still receding. For now, we don’t know for sure that the new spike in cases won’t result in a proportional increase in deaths.

Ultimately if there is one prevailing theme here, it is that of uncertainty. We still don’t know for certain how deadly the latest spike in infections is going to be, so leaders are erring on the side of overreaction. I don’t like it one bit, but I can see the angle.
Spoiler alert: there's going to be no spike in deaths

Remember when Coumo got all upset for RI stopping people entering there with NY plates?

Well now he wants to do the same for people entering N.Y. with what seems like predominantly red state plates. The Connecticut governor has to be the biggest cuck I have ever seen. He did nothing to limit NYers from pozzing up his whole state and now he is going along with this.

Cuomo says police will be stopping cars with out of state plates in New York. He says violators may face a judicial order and mandatory quarantine along with fines. He also said hotel employees should be questioning guests about their quarantine.

thing about reported numbers.. theyre just a small glance into the actual, real numbers. Especially with Americans. How many are terrified of medical debt and just keep on keeping on even with all the symptoms, or crawl into their bed to die and be found days/weeks later after you cant confirm covid. Even in places with proper healthcare most people want to stay away from hospitals on the chance they dont have it, because thats a good way to get it. You can multiply those numbers a few times, anywhere to get something closer to real.

Look going outside is fine it's not the apocalypse but if you think only 400 people died because thats what the numbers say...

What. They've been toe-tagging practically everyone who's died in the last four months as a Virus statistic, even if doing so would be totally asinine. Which is more likely: there's a hidden mile-high stack of corpses behind closed doors somewhere where The Covid Reaper coofed them to death and we just haven't found them yet, or that this virus isn't terrifically lethal (or even inconveniencing) outside its narrow band of risk categories?

It's like goldfish, I swear. One minute it's asymptomatic in a huge portion of the population. The next minute testing reveals that thousands more people have it, which shortcuts immediately to "death". We've been over this. Not old? No metabolic syndrome? No strange rare allergies or asthma? You're fine.

Spoiler alert: there's going to be no spike in deaths
I wouldn't be too sure of that. Modern media's signature move is to take a statistic that already exists (and often has for decades) and lather it up into something to screech "LOOK AT THIS THING! ISN'T IT TERRIBLE!?" Covid has been in the ballpark of about twice as deadly as the seasonal flu. Mark my words, next they're going to add something like the suicides from social isolation into the "Covid deaths" because they're vaguely related if you turn your head and squint, and that'll be the "spike".

Who do you know that's not going to the doctor? I don't even know anyone who is sick.

I meant there wouldn't be a spike in deaths caused by COVID in reality.

We know at least 1 or 2, who suffered no other illnesses and were under 60. One before people were really worrying about covid in germany, but he liked to travel asia and died quickly of unusual respiratory related complications right before anyone was testing for that. And a few family friends that took a good month recovery to be functional humans again after showing symptoms.

I don't know what Americans want, stacks of your dead neighbors being lit up in funeral pyres on your front lawn before you might maybe begin to think its real? People are getting sick, most aren't dying, but some are. a lot of old but a lot of people who have issues and dont even know it. It's not the fucking andromeda strain, but it's a problem that you can't just ignore.

There's never going to be "stack of dead neighbors" because only a tiny percentage of the people who get it actually die. So yeah, take precautions, but... what precautions? That's where personal risk level, family risk level, and economic impact kick into our calculations.

Of course it's not the damn plague... but it seems like that's what Americans want, or need to see before they believe anything. It's like there's only "eh its nothing" or "FUCK WERE ALL DEAD! PANIC!" and nothing inbetween.

Just wearing masks and not touching each other all the time, and not having huge gatherings nonstop has done wonders here. It's such a non-issue minor inconvenience but everyone can go outside, work, shop and such and enjoy their day again.

Holy shit.

I was just checking the fall 2020 CS class list again to see if anyone else ragedropped their classes yet, and was disappointed when I saw the same enrollment numbers...that is, until I looked to the side and noticed all the listings were listed as on-campus again, despite already being updated to "online" for the past day. I refreshed the page because I couldn't believe it. Either a strange bug in the system or they're having second thoughts on the "finality" of their decision. Never say never, I guess.

Though regardless of what ends up happening, I'm still taking the semester off and dropping the math major because fuck it.

I recently booked for a flight to Texas in August (my boyfriend lives there and we have been trying to find a time to visit this year) and I would have to quarantine when I come back. I do understand to an extent, but I am still pretty infuriated. The cases in Texas fucking pale in comparison to all the cases NY had since March.

you have to wear a mask while walking outside in the US? thats just stupid...

I don't wear one when walking outside. Some do. Have to wear a mask when going to store/bank/doctor's office. Can get by without a mask at the auto repair shop.

Added: Posted a thread about this in the sports area, but also worth including here. ONLY reason there will be any sort of baseball season is to satisfy contractual requirements with networks/streaming services. And that way the streaming services can justify collecting the fee for the whole season. With the "protocols" and no fans, baseball will be less fun than a colonoscopy. Might check out a game but already expect nothing worth watching. Nothing like watching MLB fuck itself in every hole.

Family-owned shop. Was there today for some repairs and an oil change. Dropped it off, came back later. No mask either time. Nothing said.

Can we get frantic motte-and-bailey swapping back and forth between "Of course it's not the plague" and "WEAR A MASK! DO YOU WANT STACKS OF CORPSES BEFORE YOU LEARN!?" as a new symptom of The Virus yet? I don't know Mandarin so I can't submit my Chinese scientific study, but my double-digit sample size should pass the current bar for credible research.

Maybe comprehension is hard. Wearing a mask to not get other people sick is simple, and common. These are easy things people can do to not make the situation worse, and do not require collapsing society. My statement is that it seems like Americans want a plague, not that I think there is a plague. Because anything short of a clear, visible, niggas dropping dead in the street doomsday plague is just "aaah aint nothin Imma do what I want" for too many people.

It's not that we want a plague. It's just that people think mandatory masks are a violation of their civil liberties for whatever reason.

It has become too politicized.
