How do I put this....

Heather is obese and has had two strokes. I believe she also has several other pre-existing conditions, and it looks like the strokes may be due to a clotting disorder.

There is no life insurer in the known world that would underwrite a policy for someone in her situation. Not one. Weight alone would almost certainly have ruled her out of anything but the most absolutely insanely overpriced policies. Things like strokes and clotting disorders are basically no-gos from an insurer's perspective even without the weight.

There will never be life insurance for Heather unless she can manage to get some kind of full-time work that offers group life insurance policies as a benefit. If she does somehow manage to do that, it's actually possible to continue the group policy after you leave on an indefinite basis, paying the standard individual rate without a health exam (though the insurance companies, knowing that only people with pre-existing conditions will take this deal, will do everything they can to get you to not continue your coverage). Switch jobs to another with life insurance policies on offer, and you could keep your old amount of insurance as an individual plan and add the new group plan as well. After a decade of job hopping you could have a million or more in policies out there. If Heather had started planning for these possibilities ten years ago, she might have put together a nice nest egg in policy payouts, enough for Zach to let her have another shower accident sometime when the kids are out of the house.

He was probably getting high off the attention and excitement- when Heather was in an especially bad way he was the one staff were talking to. He was the center of a hyper excited universe, plus he got to feel smart when the doctors explained her condition to him.

It’s the munchie-by-proxy high, there was a horrible story I saw (maybe on Forensic Files?) about a father who would suffocate his baby so that he could call an ambulance and get to be the poor heroic father with a sick child. Exactly the same thing, though as far as we know Zach didn’t cause Heather any (physical) harm. Now that Heather is getting better, the focus is all on her: physical therapy, follow-ups, encouraging her progress.
