Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

A good one from Reason. Oh, just heard death toll from the ChiCom Flu is 127,000, or fewer than the 150,000 Americans who die every month from stroke, diabetes, accidents, falls, etc. , everything but cancer and heart disease. Some of these turds sure don't like it when you provide these numbers and put everything in perspective. Tends to cut the fearmongering off right at the knees.

and that 127k is exaggerated since they changed the definition on 3/29/2020.

A shitty article from the New York Slimes trying to fear and pity-monger about Florida with a shitty headline, knowing no one will read anything else. It's only interesting for this one paragraph:

The closest hospital to Mr. Delgado’s house in Homestead, 40 miles south of Miami, is nearing capacity as Covid-19 cases soar. The situation in Miami is equally serious: One-third of all patients admitted to the city’s main public hospital over the past two weeks after going to the emergency room for car-crash injuries and other urgent problems have tested positive for the coronavirus.

Ta-dah! The beginnings of herd immunity.

If people don't even know they have it, and they test positive during the routine tests when they go to the hospital for other shit, it's a sign that people are beating it. This is not a horrible thing to have low-risk citizens beating the virus with their immune systems.

Without any cynicism involved, my only advise for you, from a place that has seen the worst of covid, is wear a mask. Drop that "you can't tell me what to do, government!" act and actually wear one when you're outside. Don't do it for other people, do it for your own family. Would you allow any relative of yours to drink a glass of water with only one drop of poison even knowing that the chance of dying would be small? Because i wouldn't, I wouldn't take any risk. Don't take risks for your family either.

This paragraph reeks of someone missing one of the important points. Simply put: Infection is assumed by many to be an inevitability. That is not to say that taking measures might delay when you get it, but rather that if you did not get it in April or may or June you will instead get it in July, or maybe August, or September, etc. Are you willing to commit today to not going to Christmas because you're trying to avoid it, just to end up getting it in February anyways?

So with that in mind, look at the second part of your point: The risk. Yes, there is risk with getting it today; however, there is also risk with getting it in October or getting it next March. So if infection is assumed and risk never goes away, then we are certain that we WILL be rolling the dice. It is important to look at what the assorted dice look like, and right now the outlook many have suggest that the die roll is going to be mostly the same regardless of when you roll it, so the price someone is willing to pay to delay that roll is minimal. There is a certain line of logic some use of waiting for a vaccine, but that typically gets rejected by virtue of the high price of delaying for such a long timeframe alone, if not also the risks with regards to failures of vaccine development, quality, or side effects.

Do not be mistaken into thinking this is about people placing value in being disobedient to the government. What the government says or does has very little bearing on it one way or the other. It is simply that the government is being disagreed with and lacks the authority to enforce mandate on those who disagree with it. I expect the situation would be similar on the other side of the coin: If the government was actively promoting herd immunity growth by encouraging public gatherings and attempting to speed up transmission as much as possible, there would still be individuals who decide to go against the government's wishes and instead isolate themselves and wear masks and the like. The government does not have the authority to inflict you with a disease in much the same way it does not have the authority to prevent us from going forth in pursuit of natural antibodies for that disease.

My county just mandated mask usage while indoors for all of July. But they are allowing a medical exemption and they aren't allowed to ask what that exemption is as long as it prevents the safe wearing of a mask. Guess who just developed asthma, weird.

Anecdotally I didn't know it was in effect yesterday and did not get stopped at any point at the grocery store. Or today at the convenience mart, and the teller didn't bother putting his mask back on while I was checking out, but put it back on when another customer came in the store wearing one. We'll see how long that lasts.

Super Karen lays down the (California) law on why stores should not attempt to enforce wearing masks.

Anyone got a travel recommendation? I've got wanderlust as I can work from anywhere now. I'd prefer somewhere without faggy mask/testing requirements and in N/S America. Not trying to make farmers my personal army.

Go someplace rural and obscure. The big cities are all masky, but if you drive an hour or two away, things go back to normal.

oh boi, when the super swine flu comes it would really suck to have it with the covids at the same time.
This is actually my fear.

People will be unwilling to follow government mandates the next time an epidemic rolls around, and the next time we could be staring down the face of a real 10-30% plague killing indiscriminately and not this 0.2% boomer-doomer fattie-finisher.

Instead of the Boy who cried Wolf it would be the Government/Media who cried Plague!

Covid 19 is killing 5% of all who contract it.

Not sure where that .2 number is coming from. Many patients are terminal with organ failure

CDC extrapolation. They believe that the actual number of asymptomatic infected is as much as 10 times the number we have for infections.

0.66% estimate from British epidemiologists examining ChiCom numbers
(Archived)
0.37% estimate from an anti-body study in Germany

Raw study in German
0.17% estimate based on an antibody study in California
0.1%, 0.2%, 0.9% Scandis, SK, and Germany

There was a second study in California which put it at around 0.24% and the CDC has put the number around 0.26% based on unconfirmed/non-hospital cases.
I was admittedly using a slightly lower-end, albeit not the lowest, estimate. In any case, it is easily less than 1%, and most estimates place it at 0.2-0.4% IFR.

But I have no fucking idea where the 5.0% number is coming from.

But I have no fucking idea where the 5.0% number is coming from.

I believe that that is from raw numbers of infected vs deaths, probably from a place with low testing such as the UK, where until recently you only got tested if you showed up at the hospital thus inflating death rate. not UK tho it's been 10% and above for ages.

This is propably why people fear it. Asymptomatic is the worst trait it can have.

This means that anybody can be sick, and you never know who lives and who dies.

I think a lot of fear is coming from that direction. People who are old can survive it but some young people die, its not a total truth that it only kills the elderly.

But as Hungary shows, discipline and social distancing can beat it.

I also do not believe chicom studies in the slightest in this regard.

Ran the usual first-of-the month errands today.

Got to the bank before it opened. Waited in line outside. Everyone but me was wearing a mask. Put mine on as I entered the building. Got business done without being hassled. Removed mask as I exited the building.

After the bank, to the car wash. Once again, everyone inside and outside was wearing a mask but me. Put my mask on upon entering the building. Took it off while waiting outside.

Lastly, to Costco, at wife's request, to get something we can't get anywhere else. Once again, everyone outside but me was wearing a mask. Even saw people wearing masks while driving. Easy to get into Costco now, just wear mask upon entry. I was struck by just how quiet the place was. Had a number of people inside. Thought to myself that was the sound of a bunch of human sheep. Got what was needed. This time nobody yanked anything out of my basket. Wasn't directed to any particular lane. Checked out. Presented receipt to a terminally bored employee. She didn't even look at my stuff. Removed mask as I walked out the door. Everyone outside but me still wearing masks. Loaded up car and went home. Nevertheless, it will be a while before I return to Costco, likely when we run out of that specific product again.

Noted that nobody anywhere I went said a word to me about not wearing a mask outside, and I said nothing to anyone about their wearing a mask outside. Was prepared to answer, "Stuck up Gavin Newsom's ass!" in case of a query.

This area is a very, very "blue" area. The vast majority seemingly blindly accept any line of bullshit "they" spew. It's as if they'd all been neutered, just about everyone but me, least in the places I visited. Not including employees here, just patrons. Utterly disgusting. Once again realized I have almost nothing in common with the "sheep". Have family members moving out of CA soon. Just sorry I can't go with them.

On a side note, went by son's place to see the baby. One month old today. She was doing what babies do, eat, burp, spit up a little, pee, poop, and sleep. Saw some pics of the runt at the beach soaking up some sunshine. Asked daughter-in-law to email the pictures.
