Something Awful used to be great. It was irreverent without being try-hard. It was offensive in all the right ways. The site was loaded with talented writers and photoshoppers and all sorts of great content producers.

Now it's a toxic husk of liberal humorlessness, self pity, ass-patters, moral relativists, and anti-semites anti-colonialists. Even the spinoff sites like Something Sensitive are their own wastelands, only to the opposite end of the political spectrum, with just as much hatred of the Jews.

Really, they probably warrant their own thread, but you have to pay to look at the forums so they're able to cloister themselves off.

I mean, not that exclusivity guarantees quality, but it can definitely be a useful tool sometimes.

4chan is a shitpile I accept, but Reddit can be useful if you use it properly. There's an unfortunate stereotype around it but it has a lot of good uses.

To me, exclusivity guarantees circlejerky nonsense. I've known it from trying to get into niche music genres with small communities where everyone knows eachother, and considers you absolute trash if you don't even know about no-name local band's 30-copy demo tape from 1988.

Something Awful's a pretty old website. It came about back when server and bandwidth costs were a lot more expensive, so that's probably how it came about. Plus they probably wanted to prevent an influx of trolls and mouthbreathers flooding the site.

Of course, now the site's absolutely loaded with chaff anyway, but it seems like that's what they want. It's a really sad story.

And you're right that the exclusivity's caused a lot of problems. The site's glory years are now very far in the past; her irreverence replaced by Tumblrina paranoia.

Seems I came into this thread at just the right time. My first exposure to him was also on something awful but I think it was in a thread before the one posted, can't really remember. Followed that on to the ED page then lost track of him for a couple years till the liquid saga.

Well, for certain values of the word "fine" I suppose, like being full of psychotic, worthless people. . .actually I'm finding it hard to find a value for "fine" that 4chan fits. But I still like it, or at least how it was years ago.

I saw the Julay video on 4Chan with the audio redubed (I think it was back in 2009 or so). My cousin and his friends were making fun of me with it. To this day I don't know why they did that.
