I don't know why he doesn't do the static archive of older content. You could still preserve post histories, etc in the static archive data by just mapping userIDs. It would take a little work and everything would be a bit fucky for a few months to a year after cut over, but you would have stopped digging. You could even have a "posts older than 9/11/20 have been found. Display?" and sell access to "The Something Awful Confederate Museum" as yet another upcharge.

Hell, you could ease that bump by getting seeder data. Set up something to harvest all posts for say 3-4 months, and just auto create them in the live data assigned to the right users. Even if SA's backend code is irredeemably fucked, just make a scraper and put everything into a new database.

But of course in addition to Lowtax being a lazy addict whos system admin skills have not been sharpened by two decades on ambien, doing that would reset forum activity for the subforums and expose just how dead & gay SA is now.
