Hatred (Game)

A focus on gameplay, as the developers have stated their goal is, is not a bad thing at all.
If they really wanted to just focus on gameplay and didn't take the story seriously, they would have made something like Lovely Planet or Serious Sam, and they wouldn't have put that much love and detail into the
Tactical Stone Kold eXecutions and your character's whinefest manifesto.

I really like it when edgelords can't stand their ground, though.

Hatred: The only murder simulator to punish you for fufilling the games objective of giving into your darker desires. Edgy but unique.

That was totally the subtext of Hotline Miami, though. At least the first one.

The subtext of Hotline Miami was very different than I described with Hatred.

Hotline Miami let you conduct murder but everyone was inherently hostile to you. And it's hard to consider the game cryptically asking you why you enjoy murdering people a punishment.

You're technically right, but I'd say it still serves the same ultimate purpose as far as getting the player to look at the violence they're committing goes.

In Hotline Miami, you're never given a solid reason as to why you're doing what you're doing (unless you get the secret ending), so the only answer you can reasonably give to "Do you enjoy hurting other people?" is yes.

Similarly, in Hatred, the fact that the game requires you to instigate the violence basically forces you to admit that you're engaging in violence for its own sake, rather than for any of the thin justifications that other shooters use as plot.

That might be what the developers meant when they said they wanted to focus on gameplay and not plot, but the fact that they went with a mass shooting as the reason for the violence instead of Hotline Miami's "kill Russians because you're brainwashed" isn't a neutral decision.

If they really wanted to go for maximum edgelord status, they'd make a compelling engine and then make sure there are readily available modding tools for everyone, so that every other edgelord retard out there can make up mods to reenact any mass shooting du jour, using realistic replicas of the locus and the perpetrators and victims.

That way you get the maximum amount of bullshit as some idiots in the media will be trolled into writing hysterical stories about said mods.

The game runs on Unreal 4 and they have confirmed modding tools are in the works

I don't really care for the game but people be treating this game like Satan came all over it.

It's so huge a pic I can't even see it.

I admit that seeing the lengths that are taken to stop Mr. Edgelord in this new trailer have me interested in this game. If there end up being boss battles in this game, I might just buy it.
