David Reimer being raised "as a girl" is not what "fucked him up". The sustained childhood mental, emotional, physical and sexual abuse that Money put him and his twin brother through is what did that. Lest we forget that David's twin brother, Brian, also committed suicide due to the childhood abuse he and his brother both suffered.
That's not to say that we should be okay with boys being raised as girls in general, but the reason this sort of thing is wrong and abusive isn't because the kids are being raised with the wrong set of gender roles and expectations. It's because it involves mutilating their bodies, giving them medications that will sterilize them and destroy their health, because it hurts other children who are forced to sacrifice their privacy and safety, and because it involves lying to children and convincing them of things that aren't true (among other things).
I know you're probably generalizing but I felt this should be addressed, because a lot of people do try to reduce the Reimer case to just "it's wrong to raise a boy as a girl, look what harm it did" when that... really wasn't the most egregious harm done. This boy had his body mutilated multiple times to be made into a facsimile of female genitalia, he was forced to act out sex acts with his own brother, among other abuses - it was about so much more than him being made to wear skirts, and honestly making it about that feels disrespectful to the memories of David and Brian Reimer and what they went through.
