Its a "smart" idea (in their eyes), because civil court can find the officers "guilty" and fuck over their lives even if criminal court finds them innocent. Unlike criminal court the burden of proof is lower (guilty beyond a reasonable doubt vs preponderance of the evidence) and the officers can be found say 30% at fault and would still need to pay restitution.

The US really needs an equivalent of the Mista'arvim units that exist in Israel. Their whole purpose is to go undercover and join groups that are seeking to destroy the state, blend in, mark certain key protesters, and arrest them during protests. It would have completely prevented Chaz because Raz and co would have been arrested, it would have crippled riots because anyone could be a cop, and they would be leaderless because the key protesters would be arrested.

The Feds do do this, but it's harder to bag and tag even so given US law. You can thank Hoover fucking things up royally and getting a huge clapback for how hamstrung the FBI is in that regard - though honestly, that's probably a good thing, long-run. They might also be deliberately using the kiddy gloves right now to get a feel on how wide the networks are - cells are going to try pretty hard to get everyone around them to be smart about their SIM usage, their internet presence, so-on, but all it takes is one little fuckup to create a log of legally presentable data. Way easier than the old idea of 'uhhh, just tap every phone, whether or not you have a warrant, and we'll figure it out later'

Yeah, I was wrong. But I did find the actual Q&A with Seattle PD here. It's a decent, civil conversation that lets the officers give their side, which naturally means no one will listen and it won't help anything.

(The guy doing it, Converge Media, is a local whose studio was physically located near the 3rd precinct building inside CHAZ. He did great reporting out of there the entire time.)
