As for the opening along the middle, it's more than likely to concentrate flow into the river without it going off to the side.
My bad - the vid I’m looking at is a weird angle - I meant the middle as in halfway up the structure but looking at different angles that’s just my mistake from viewing the first video. They’re more in the base of the spillway.

What’s the maximum outflow, I wonder and has it ever been used? Just watching a clip of those three outflows from the centre of that section and they are insane. I’m wondering what pushing that kind of force through the structure itself does? Why are the outlets at the middle like that? Is there a reason?

Looking around, it seems the maximum outflow is 116,000 cubic meters/second, though I would assume that's for emergency situations only. It doesn't appear it normally goes above 40,000 during flood control protocols, which is where they appear to be right now (39,900).

Yeah there are three layers of outlets in the face of the dam. If the reservoir approaches 175m maybe we'll see all of them open. That would be quite a treat

AP, via State-owned CCTV, reports they have blown up a dam in Anhui. It calls this the country's worst flooding since 1998, which destroyed 3 million homes and killed 2 000 people.

So it not a nothingburger, thats for sure, although I am still skeptical the the whole complex is going to go down.

I don't think it's super likely, but I'd consider it enough of a possibility to be a legitimate concern. Either way, things are likely to continue to get worse downriver, and they're already skating on the edge of having things go seriously south. Bad floods in the past have put Wuhan underwater for months.

Translation of Tweet: Chaohu Lake, one of the five largest lakes in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, reached the highest water level in history. The water level of Zhongmiao Station reached 12.82 meters at noon on the 19th.

China has pissed off their ancient water dragons. Probably didn't help when that pesky cultural revolution executed all the people who knew their cultic religious rites. Now you can't even pray for the rain to stop in China without a party member bagging you.

Edit:
The last inflow figure I saw yesterday was over fifty thousand. If they CCP is saying it's gone down, they are either lying or the water is going somewhere else. Maybe a leak?

That dam which they "blew up" could have something to do with it.

The website briefly showed the inflow at 40,000 m³/s, but the outflow hasn't caught up to it. If they're lying about the flow to keep people calm, I won't be surprised at all. If there's a leak, I'm glad I don't live there.

They cant even do a decent animal sacrifice now since most animals they had are nearly/actually extinct.
I guess CCP thinks regular human sacrifice will do.

Maybe, but it went back up a couple hours after the numbers you've got there. Three Gorges is the one third from the bottom.

The ones to watch out for are the 6th from the top (Hankou) which is in Wuhan. If it gets to 30 m, that's when Wuhan starts getting fucked. Also 4th from the bottom (Maoping (2)) right above the 3GD is a little distance upstream from the 3GD. Until recently, it was being updated more regularly than the 3GD. But if you see Maoping at a higher level than the 3GD it gives a good idea of where the reservoir is heading.

Because they'd literally just invented agriculture about a thousand years before the white man showed up. Or at least agriculture that was any useless. A couple of their mounds I'm pretty sure have been rekt over the years by flooding, some recently. But forget them, don't fuck with the Mississippi. Go ask Cairo ("Kay-Roh") Illinois which is surrounded by giant-ass levees. Or go to Louisiana and look at all the flood control structures. The Mississippi River drains like 2/3 of the US and is full of mud and dirt and has been fighting the Army Corps of Engineers for centuries and mostly winning.
Really, just ask Memphis. I said in the riots thread when people were protesting on the freaking Mississippi Bridge that if anyone fell, rescuers would be hard-pressed to find them alive (or at all really) since it moved so quickly.

All I know is that even Mao Zedong will kick Xi's ass in Hell when he gets there because of shit like this.

Xi Jinping takes control of a budding superpower that's primed to become the dominant nation on Earth and he might end up pissing it all away because of his own arrogance and hubris. It's like something out of a Greek tragedy...

Once the dam really does burst, China is perma-fucked and the CCP will no longer be the force they are in world politics. If Trump pulls it off and ends up winning a second term and ramping up the trade war, it would be the cherry on top.
Every communist-controlled country does this. Cuba, before the Castro regime, happily produced lots of coffee, but the regime destroyed all of the production because the regime said that to produce more coffee, it must be grown in the plains. Of course, nobody's gonna point out how bad this is if they don't want to get thrown in jail or killed, so they go with it. Coffee production is now a sixth of what it used to be.
The other issue is that all of that waste is gonna impact the oceans for Korea and Japan. This isn't even accounting for all of those nuclear plants that are gonna get wiped out by this. It's a nightmare scenario. These fuckers, even when they get their comeuppance, other people also get the cons of getting wrapped up into it too. It's even worse that apparently 90% of the worlds medical manufacturing will be wiped out from this too since it's within range of the flooding.
It didn't have to be this way, but you have the epic combination of corporate short-term next-quarter thinking moving all production to a communist country with the demand that everyone must not question the government leadership's choices, and you get this.

So what are the odds that the Three Gorges Dam survives this flood, either because the construction was sufficient or sheer luck, and that gets the Chinese complacent and thinking they can go for cheaper maintenance, and then 15-20 years when the next flood this size comes through, the whole thing collapses?

Huh, sounds like SARS vs COVID-19.

They keep polluting their environment like mad so they most likely wont have to wait too long for the next one.
Its heavy rain from here on out bros.
