Dude, they just were rich from the get-go. The "natural" route closed way back in the 60s. India has the same GDP as Britain, 20 times the population, and greater inequality. Some Indians are rich, and they don't like living in a shithole, or they send their children to get prestigious Western education and those children don't feel like coming back. It's the same reason why e.g. Nigerian-Americans have better outcomes than Basketball-Americans: they're just fucking rich.

I get the same feeling anytime my CNN watching facebook browsing parents start talking about orange man or what's happening with the riots. It's very frustrating trying to talk about either with them because it's impossible to have a discussion on the same level with their view so warped and any attempts on trying to correct it gets shutdown with whatever talking point they heard of CNN/Facebook or "How can you defend Trump!" when simply correcting misinformation.
