Donald Trump calls for delay to 2020 US presidential election

Donald Trump has called for November's presidential election to be postponed, saying increased postal voting could lead to fraud and inaccurate results.

He suggested a delay until people can "properly, securely and safely" vote.

There is little evidence to support Mr Trump's claims but he has long railed against mail-in voting which he has said would be susceptible to fraud

US states want to make postal voting easier due to public health concerns over the coronavirus pandemic.

In a tweet, Mr Trump said "universal mail-in voting" would make November's vote the "most inaccurate and fraudulent election in history" and a "great embarrassment to the USA".

Earlier this month, six US states were planning to hold "all-mail" ballot elections this November: California, Utah, Hawaii, Colorado, Oregon and Washington.

These states will automatically send postal ballots to all registered voters, which then have to be sent back or dropped off on election day - although some in-person voting is still available in certain limited circumstances.

About half of US states allow any registered voter to vote by post on request.

Critics of postal voting argue that people could vote more than once via absentee ballots and in person. Mr Trump has in the past said there was a risk of "thousands and thousands of people sitting in somebody's living room, signing ballots all over the place".

However, there is no evidence of widespread fraud, according to numerous nationwide and state-level studies over the years.

Despite the habitual cope from TDS-sufferers, Trump is not stupid. He couldn't be as successful as he is, and his opponents as unsuccessful as they are, if he were.

He knows this isn't going to happen. He knows what kind of Pavlovian reaction it will simulate from the lügenpresse. What's the effect/purpose of saying this?
I'm not so much worried he'll actually do it. I'm worried this will boil over from the usual journo wailing and gnashing of teeth. Expect someone to throw a Peaceful Molotov at a soft target or some shit.

Most likely, based on the previous established pattern you'd have to be a nincompoop not to notice by now, this is a diversion to make the press look at the shiny thing over here so they don't focus on something else going on that Trump actually cares about.

It also probably serves as a way to push the end to lockdown measures so people can vote in person.

I want it to be him floating this idea and presently surprised that there isn't as much pushback from this idea and actual support for it. :optimistic:

To either get his polling numbers up or just for the attention of it. He realizes that there's a legitimate chance he might not get a second term, and that his supporters are way more supportive/willing to make their support count (voting), so he's at the point where he's throwing shit at the wall to see if any of them will eat it up. And if that fails at least it gets the Dems and Leftists riled up.

Successful at what, triggering the libs, owning the libs, and monitoring the situation?
Building onto his father's brand and nationalizing his name brand.

But yeah, nowadays, he's only monitoring the situation and as well all know MONITORING is the SAME EXACT THING as doing something about a situation.

The constitution states Congress gets to set the time for the Election, not when the election has to be held specifically. The formal date is simple statutory law, not Constitutional law.

Obviously though due to term limits, an election has to be held before they expire. Bored college professors like to speculate what would happen if the prior cycles congress and presidency expired without a replacement. Things have probably gone to hell if this would occur though, so it may be irrelevant. IMO though it basically would mean a full federal government shutdown, and the States would have to pick up the slack while whatever incident caused things to seize up is resolved.
Yeah I shoulda been more clear. Congress can’t cede that power to the president or any other branch

Did he actually say that though?

"Delay the election until Americans can vote safely and securely?" sounds like he's questioning why someone would want mail-in-voting.

IDK maybe I'm autistic, but it reads like a facetious statement to me.

If New York is any indication, we won’t know the results for months after the election anyway. They are claiming to need several months to count all the mail in ballots from their primaries.

Every time they try mail in voting, double digit percents of the vote get lost or thrown out, so maybe this whole thing is to get his supporters to vote in person, since their vote is more likely to count that way.
