Somebody analyzed the knife models from yansim, more polygore.

Why does that knife have so many polygons?! :o
There are only two reasons I can think of why a knife would have that many polygons.
  1. Alex truly believes that "more polygons = higher definition/a better game experience." (Not likely.)
  2. Alex is exceptional. (More likely.)
Id bet its the same issue as the toothbrush model. Alex took some kitchen knife asset from the asset store that was supposed to be used for detailed closeups in commercials or something and just put it in his game without any care.

This is just another case about him not understanding what he's buying and how to use it. Professionally made assets generally are that high-poly for rendering purposes with the assumption that you'll LOD it down to a sensible level yourself if you need a version for a game or some other application where polycount matters (this is like <30 seconds of effort in Blender and I assume nearly the same in Maya, etc). If the model is complex enough that automatic LOD generation would create bad results (eg: things with lots of complex topo or animation rigs) most assets will ship with their own premade LOD versions to save you the trouble.

Also, isn't most anti-piracy stuff just 'we'll stall competent programmers from working around our shit for about a week, maybe a month if we're really good'?

minor offtopic sperg: patch often enough that the release groups stop keeping up and sell as cheaply as possible and people buy instead of pirate; thank you for coming to my gdc talk

That and, a lot of the game assets were made by volunteers who don't understand the concept of optimization and being economical with polygons.

Just another reason why the game runs like shit, (besides gratuitous else-if commands) they have over 9000 extra polygons on any given model and this probably won't be fixed because: 1. Inexperienced volunteers, 2. Alex doesn't realize this is a problem.

Reminder that Yandev spent money on a sex doll instead of paying money to hire good modelers lel

Alex's statement that everything's going to get replaced after the kickstarter, wouldn't that inflate the price required to run the kickstarter?

I mean, with the visual assets, whatever, but he said that about the coding too. And the coding is the base that all of this shit stands on.

It's funny to me that this past 6 years of development is going into a polished turd of a demo, and after that he wants to run a Kickstarter to hire an actual competant team to make the actual game.

The demo is most certainly going to put people off, because it's going to be a piece of shit. And it most likely won't have the debug commands or Easter Eggs to dick about with, so people are going to be bored out of their minds. Most people who play the game wind up dicking about with Easter Eggs and debug commands.

Apparently, the demo/final game won't have debug commands, except for entering a password at the title screen (which is an exceptional unlock method in and of itself). No doubt this decision will probably alienate a huge chunk of Alex's fanbase.

sigh, been a long time since my last time posted in this shit show.

Anyway, the reason for that stupid high-poly models (just like any other furniture models) he got in the game is because they are STOLEN from 3D model hubs that are intended for ArchViz (Architectural Visualisation). Those models are usually used for interior concept/CGI and rendered not in real-time.

In archviz models, shader is everything and they even ignore the UV map because the texture usually is tiled. That's why the model relies on high poly to retain its quality since it's going to be pre-rendered anyway. Also usually archviz guys made these models REALLY FAST. The target is to create quality 3d model AS FAST as possible. That's why you see more of these models easily available in the 3d model hubs to download.

While in 3D model for games, UV map (and the textures) is everything because it is rendered in realtime thus it has limited processing capability. The target is to create a quality 3d model with as low poly count as possible (and fewer textures, even). One might even spend UV mapping as long as they did with creating the mesh. Add the normal map baking, shaders, etc making it even longer process. Thus making it quite difficult to make these models properly, unlike Archviz model before.

and don't even get me started with LODs.

I've spoken about this before. Especially about the toothbrush meme we had. You just can't believe any 3d model he 'has' in that 'game'.

It's really mind boggling that he is working like that, and well, open about it.
You are just funding a broken piece of shit that will later be discarded and then you have to pay again for the actual, possible, IF IT HAPPENS, real game. Absolutely retarded

Are you implying YandereDev uses stolen art? Like his code.
It's believed he has used art without permission [Such as the grass texture, artwork from an ex volunteer way after they left the project, etc.]
The grass texture that was originally used has now since been replaced. But whoever created it is unknown.
