We'll never know. It could be just age. It could also be alcoholism, or fatigue, or pure apathy, or his shitty retarded setup, or the fact that he came up playing 8- and 16-bit games and gaming has gotten more complex and demanding since then and the skill creep has finally caught up with him.

As with so many things about Phil, we're unlikely to ever get The Answer.

I doubt that skill creep point. Games he played (like Skyrim) are easy as fuck, yet even then he managed to somehow get anihilated, not to mention his Papers Please playthrough. The latter makes me think that he indeed is only in it for the money, because Papers Please is such an easy game once you know what you're doing and are able to quickly spot discrepancies, and from a TIHYDP video I saw, he makes no investment into knowing what the fuck to do during the later stages of the game.
Also, in that same playthrough, he allowed through a serial killer that was on the very newspaper that is shown when you start a new day.

Even games like Skyrim have enemies with behavior advanced enough to flummox Phil. One of his long-standing and frequent complaints about modern games is that adversaries don't follow set patterns that he can predict and exploit. Watch literally any video in which he fights a soulsbourne boss and I guarantee it will come up. Phil is completely unable to adapt to any situation in flux.

Now, that's not to say that's his only problem. Games which present him with the type of challenge he demands also fuck him up. Just look at when he played all the old Mega Man games. But he very clearly is still stuck in the era of "enemy will do X so I do Y" flowchart style of play. This also describes his fighting game methodology to a T; he hated DBFZ because through a combination of lack of reaction time and inability to adjust to things like tagouts the AI regularly embarrassed him.

This question has probably been asked a kajillion times, but...
why is he so bad at video games? A fully developed adult should be capable of understanding that if the game tells you the A button jumps, you should press A to jump. It honestly makes me feel nothing but pity towards an adult in his late 30s being this bad at such a formulaic and simple thing.

Five reasons:

1) He obviously didn't play anything but Street Fighter during the '90s, because honestly those games kick his ass more than anything one could describe as modern, which there is only one logical explanation for: lack of experience with them.

2) His inherent emotional response to being out-done by anything/anyone is not the kind that fosters improvement, it fosters stagnation. Other players started surpassing him in skill during his FGC days, and he didn't adapt because his only reaction to that, ever, is to get butt-hurt. Like a toddler.

3) Even though he has cut off a lot of emotional contact with others now, he is lazier than ever, gets way more of a rush out of buying his way into being a big shot in a wrestling mobile game, drinks heavily, has a shitty sleep schedule, and spends too much time keeping with detractor content.

4) His job isn't to be competent at video games, his job is to be an autistic clown for the entertainment of special needs kids so they'll toss him their disability checks. Whether Phil sees it that way or not, the result is that he feels no drive whatsoever to get good at games because that isn't what he actually does for a living.

5) He's lazy as fuck. He barely puts any effort into his clown streamer shtick, you're not going to see him train for something he pretends is his job.

Tevin's restream of DSP's debunk stream and I completely forgot how hilariously bad that stream was. Even in the first 15 minutes it's just pure dumbness. Constantly talking about his tweet and being convinced that the tweet has changed public opinion of him, calling the tweet EPIC and name dropping all the content creators who retweeted it (get that clout, Mr. Average Joe Underdog Fill), and saying the phrase "burn the Jews". This man is insane.

It’s really strange and I’ve never heard anyone else refer to their significant other as “my family”. I always figured it’s a phrase that allows him to LARP being a “mature adult”.

That and for sympathy because "they're attacking my family" sounds more horrible than "they're attacking my cat", especially when literally no one is attacking his cat. It enables him to keep things vague, which is Phil's specialty.

You see guys, he isn't trying to be a top level player at every game he plays he's just trying to have "fun". Which is odd because most games he plays through he looks miserable as fuck when he isn't going full clown mode. Also the concept that skill is divorced from fun says a lot, I'd argue I have the most fun at games when I know a ton about them and can play at a "high level". Mind you these statements are just excuses, if Phil's a king of anything it's excuses.

Why is he really bad at games? Autism.

Saying "my family" isn't vague, it's just plain inaccurate. Whether he even knows this is up for debate, because he's extremely immature and autistic.

And I would say it's more his comfort zone than his specialty. For example, when he recently admitted to reading the entire Champions thread and claimed it was filled with nothing but insane bullshit, that's a lot more specific than he was previous willing to get, but you notice he doesn't go into what specifically is bullshit? Or even attempt to prove it's bullshit? That gives away a lot more than what legit vagueness would, but he doesn't notice that because he feels safe so long as he doesn't actually try to go toe-to-toe with us since he knows he can't.

Couple that with his comments about people wanting him to play at the highest difficulty setting wanting to see him suffer, and you get a pretty clear picture of someone who does not understand the appeal of anything but SF and gacha, but is also unwilling to admit that 99% of video games are simply not his forte.

Like I said, extremely insecure and immature.

That's why I keep harping on what I believe is the pigroach holy grail and that's some sort of recording of him not being the pigroach meaning not talking with the expectation of "muh detractors" present like say a discord meeting with his wheelchair vanguard. It would be as big in the pigroach lore as the famous Hitler-Mannerheim recording (for those who don't know what that is it was a intimate conversation between Hitler and Finish Prime Minister Mannerheim in what the pigroach would call "behind the scenes" talk.
