It's a tough call for him. Gaytor has proven he would be a devoted and faithful wife, but Dame really needs that green card. Then there is Rand who shares his love of liver destruction and Bibble, the only one who can give him what he misses most about prison.

With Dax I think it goes deeper than simply him either guntguarding or using him as free entertainment. Dick likes to fuel the illusion that he's this detached anti-moralfagging blackhearted ultra but he's actually very passive and emotionally dependant.

Keep in mind this guy kept up a working relationship with Maddox, who he hated and who hated him for like 2 years and nobody really cottoned on how fucked this relationship was, until after the fact. Dick's bit has always been that he's the most sincere insincere person on the planet, and he'll clearly use that to his advantage for when he wants to keep up appearances.

I think Maddox's awful 'why the biggest problem really ended' video effectively broke him. He lost his ultimate meal ticket, all access to the fans he'd built up over the years and all his personal friends from UCB disowned him overnight and Maddox tried blacklisting anyone who would support Dick. He was 'cancelled' before being cancelled was a thing.

This personality, combined with this huge event leads to Dax's interesting contradiction. He has to pretend to be detached enough from everyone so that them leaving him can't ever hurt him but he also knows what being fed to the mob is like, so carries around this massive guilt complex about ever abandoning anybody, even if he knows deep down that they deserve it.

It wouldn't surprise me if the gunt's weird mimicry of Dick is a sub-conscious attempt to manipulate Dax's latent paternal instinct so that he won't abort him.
