It's so vague/broad a comparison as to be worthless. You could describe literal any situation in which someone exchanges money with another party for something with such a comparison. From a subscription to the local paper to a guy buying a child sex slave.
The grifting thing, the key component, is also ignored in that comparison. Like I said, not every product is sold solely on the product, some are sold based on the person behind it. With Patreon, a lot of the content isn't being "paid for" insomuch as the people are supporting the person behind the content, i.e. Sargon, Tim Pool, Dax, etc. You get the content for free, your buy-in for the content itself was nil - the money comes out when you like the person enough to give them cash.
That's the difference I'm pointing out between a regular "I have a product, come buy my product" businessperson with something to sell and your regular e-grifter. The businessperson at most gives you a small sample or outright holds back until you buy the product - the product's the focus. E-grifter types put out a significant amount of their work for free if not literally all of it, and ask you to support them - they're the focus. Meaning that their business model hinges on whether or not people like them enough to give them cash, giving them every incentive they'd need to put on a facade for their respective audiences and to keep it going at all costs - lying, doxing, whatever.
I can't really think of a comparison to that that'd work, but the sliminess is near used-car salesman levels for certain.

I'm not so sure the fans do. Many seem to want his advice and/or want to emulate him. If they didn't think that was a good life, they wouldn't. And many - Dax included - uses the excuse it's just a character when something bad comes out that he says or does.

Locking content that is essentially the same as the free content is a grift by most people's definition. But ultimately its up for a never ending debate since value is subjetive. Thats just my opinion tho. I cant stomach listening to the show, does he run ads at all for the normal show? If not then that changes things slightly.

Dax has tried playing off that he isn't upset with Joosh and Karen Farms this whole time while taking subliminal things he thinks will own the haters. Dax will pretend he totally is cool with Joosh was never mad than slowly throw hints and tips of stuff he wants his e-friends to do for him. Dax tries to stay as slippery as possible to slither to what ever side will give him what he wants the best.
Dax may try a Riley v. Null bloodsports match and claim that the shame the loser would feel (Safe to assume Retard Riley would be BTFO) is punishment enough. Dax will pretend he wasn't giving Riley ass pats for going after Null and doing a Rap with Digipedo. etc. etc. etc.
