Picking fights and making enemies like this led to the Corn Prophecy and Ethan Ralph's doom spiral, and I just don't quite understand why this is the hill he chose to die on. Just to get a shot at revenge on PPP for making a clown of him I guess.

Dax hasn't really seen a hit in his patreon. This is obviously his only concern. He's a 40 year old sociopath who treats his "friends" like toys. The second anyone of his "friends" rejects his reality, he tries to break them like an upset toddler. He knew about Asterios telling people that he was manipulating Marie and Jamie way before Tommy Two Feet or whatever said anything on the reddit.
Dax just used that moment to capitalize on distancing himself from Asterios because Asterios refused to make content for him and only existed as a liability. That's when Dax had to make Asterios out as a gossiper and liar, accusing Asterios of everything Dax made his career on, relying on his audience to be just as dumb to not notice, and it worked.
Seems like Dax is relying on the same theory, as he always has. You can always count on Dax to follow this basic step by step. First he engages, then he says something relative, then he pretends to not understand or misinterpret, then he mocks you as incompetent or not able to convey your point of view in an intelligent way because he "cant understand" and thus you're stupid and irrelevant, then he mocks again and writes you off as stupid and insane.
That's the basis of his usual argument strategy, and you can pretty much outline that with all or most of the things he says.
