I think it's natural to side with whoever isn't giving you the ultimatum. I definitely don't agree with it in this case but out of some mix of principle, guilt, and the psychological need to defend your friend, the cards will fall this way more often than not.
I think Dick is full of shit when he says he's defending this as a free speech issue. I think the easiest explanation is that Digi came from a pretty woke background, yet he didn't discount Dick as a neonazi/rape apologist when the maddox rapelist video came out. IIRC Digi mentioned once that there was a lot of pressure from his core to drop Dick when he began to associate with the IBS crowd (if my recollection is accurate, in this conversation Dick also chastises Digi for his pedoshit, saying that it often pins him between his fans and their friendship). Dick sees Digi as a guy who was loyal (that word again) to him and seeks to reward digi with the same loyalty in return. Dick was completely radioactive to pretty much anyone who hadn't already been unpersoned at that point, and I think Digi extending his hand to him at that time meant a lot to him and still does. I think the NP2 mafia shit has put Dick in a spot where he isn't willing to just say "yeah he likes/does this shit that I don't agree with but at the end of the day he's stood by me and in turn I'll stand by him through all this shit", when in reality if he simply said "that's his business, I don't think he's a pedophile and that's all I have for comment on that matter" he could have gotten away scott free.
I still think Null was entirely wrong on the whole Riley shit. Riley is a nobody who has put all of his eggs in the dick basket. My money is on a scenario where Riley has put everything on the line to get close to Dick, sees Null as someone who not only can see through his bullshit and recognize how much of an albatross he is, but also as someone who is also a good enough friend to tell it like it is (which he clearly demonstrated today) and is a clear threat to his job security/his relationship with his surrogate father. I'm not suggesting Riley is a mastermind by any means, but dumb people can be just as manipulative as anyone else, and him outright telling null to leave is exactly the type of clumsy, idiotic move I would expect from a dipshit like him. I understand the need to trust your instincts on this one, and even if that was the case the pedoshielding gives null more than enough justification to cut ties with the guy, but I think it's highly likely that our chad prom king is being played by two degenerate drug addicts who are using Dick's pity for them to alienate him from anybody smart enough to recognize the grift so they can continue to leech off of him in one way or another.
I want to punctuate this novel of a post by saying that none of this shit justifies Dick's retarded outbursts, nor does it reflect poorly on Null for cutting ties with a guy who would more likely than not inadvertently drag him to hell with them. I think Dick is a weak, insecure man with abandonment issues on both sides. He's terrified that his remaining "friends" will drop him for whatever reason, and is also horribly guilty about abandoning any of them. The amount of slack he's given nearly everyone who's been a part of the show since he was kicked out of UCB suggests as much. Someone else made a longpost about that a few days ago that I can't be assed to dig up but I think Occam's Razor applies here and I think just about any relationship stress that we've seen him go through can be explained in this way pretty easily.
