Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

Minnesota’s farmers from the “rocks and cows” area of the state (that is a real quote from our Governor) had a protest today because the state is threatening to impose restrictions on a local rodeo or shut it down. Wadena is only an hour outside of Minneapolis. Farmers from 50+ miles outside of Wadena drove in a convoy to protest. Rise, America, Rise.

Pretty much, yeah. If this was all "You should wear a mask, especially if you're at risk or have a cough" + "hey Tuesday / Thursday mornings the first 2 hours of the store are meant for at risk people, so stay home if you can" then I'd be fine with it. That's reasonable.
That's the funny part. When my state opened up and certain outdoor activities were allowed again, I attended a couple of events where the organizers would post the announcements through social media and add a general, "Please wear a mask if you can, and be sure to stay six feet away from anyone not part of your family."

Guess what, people actually did those things because it was recommended in a polite, reasonable, and non-confrontational way. Most people are willing to cooperate with such items if they're presented appropriately. Our Governor and Attorney General, on the other hand, are telling people if they don't do these things, they'll end up with a misdemeanor on their record and find themselves out $500 while acting all, "You'll do it because I say so, and if you question me, you're making it a political debate." Adults don't like to be unnecessarily treated as if they're helpless young children. Elected officials expecting their constituents to do or avoid certain things need to present a solid argument and basis for it. Facts, reason, and logic all seem to have been cast aside indefinitely; that's not a good thing at all. *sigh*

As a result, there's a massive backlog of positive tests pending assignment to specific counties, and each one assigned is treated as a new case on the day that it is processed. As a consequence, the test positivity rate is inflated to ridiculous amounts. The kicker? The governor is using that positivity rate as a bellweather for when reopening can resume.
Too many people I know look solely at the raw daily numbers and base their opinions on that. If, for example, cases go from 200 to 500, they freak about about the apparent 2.5x increase and don't dig deeper to learn 300 of the 500 were cases from prior days that weren't yet enter into the system. Take those away, and there was no change from the previous day even though the media reported cases more than doubled in 24 hours. This also falls back on the lack of any sort of critical thinking, analysis skills, and any sort of applied math skills.

"MIOSHA, which regulates workplace safety in Michigan, issued the citations under the “general duty” clause requiring employers to provide workplaces free from recognized hazards causing or likely to cause death or physical harm. The citation carries a fine of up to $7,000."
Maybe I missed something, but I thought at one point, there was a state ruling that MIOSHA couldn't asses the $7000 fines because Whitmer's Executive Order set a $500 fine for violating her relevant executive order(s) and that took precedence over MIOSHA regs and fines. It won't surprise me if this very point ends up being argued in court.

Albion College is requiring returning students to install and use a contact-tracing app.
I suppose Albion figures they can get away with this being a private college. On one hand, I understand their desire to keep everyone safe on campus and try to minimize COVID cases for those people.

However, required monitoring and tracking is a Pandora's box or slippery slope with huge privacy ramifications. How far will they go? Will they eventually want to track students under 21 to make sure they don't go to frat houses having parties so to deter underage drinking? Will they use it to enforce on-campus curfews? Funny how the usual privacy advocates seem uncharacteristically silent about this; not even a"We're looking into this to make sure student privacy is balanced with student safety" canned response on the matter.

Fines, increased fees, failed classes, expulsion. That's just the start.
Albion has already implied students refusing to install the app will be dismissed from campus if not outright expelled. The exact words from the article were, "They're [students who refuse to install the app] choosing to take the semester off."

One of the local universities is continuing to charge students the full housing costs for the semester even though all classes go online after thanksgiving (don’t get me started in that logic.) and students won’t be allowed to live on campus. Their response? Oh we are storing your stuff so we have to charge the full amount.
I wonder what would happen for students living close enough to campus that they packed their stuff and took it home after Thanksgiving in an attempt to avoid "storage fees." I'm sure the university would still find a way to charge them because students -- even at traditional, non-profit universities -- are regarded as little more than dollar signs these days.

Anyone dumb enough to snitch on off-campus parties is just asking to get the shit kicked out of them.

No, the public and the various industries won't put up with two years of this bullshit. Don't push your luck any further.

Oh, and the key difference here is that the world didn't stand still during the Spanish Flu, so why the fuss now?
"Becasue because covid is unknown, you Grandma killing, nazi, magats REEEEEEE.." that's their go to answer, even when they don't say the latter. The answer is always because covid is new and unknown or the simple fact people are dying.

Wear a proper mask and wash your hands before you touch your face, you won't inhale enough to get infected.
You said cough into your elbow before genius.
Wearing a mask won't completely block it either, plenty of medical staff get the virus and they're wearing Full PPE.
I've seen some for New York that are higher, but it's not worth doing a literature review for a few tenths of a percent. There are multiple studies from all over the world converging on a sub-1% IFR, assuming you live in a functioning first world nation, which obviously excludes NYC.
And if those studies are based on the antibody results they're fucking worthless, because as I said they include the common cold.

No, the key difference is the Chinese virus is 10-20x less lethal than the Spanish flu (0.25%-0.5% die of it) and almost exclusively kills the elderly and the severely unhealthy rather than the Spanish flu which is famous for killing young adults. Yet for some reason we treat it like it's ebolapox or airborne AIDS, almost guaranteed to kill you or cause long-term suffering for life.
It's interesting, the death toll here in Germany is quite minimal, so it doesn't really scare people anymore. So recently there have been quite a lot of articles on how the Coofs will totally fuck you up long term, that recovery takes months and will probably cause permanent damage, and so on and so forth. Now we have a small increase in positive test results and the whole fearmongering about a second wave (which was predicted basically every few weeks) being in full swing is starting again.
It's so tiring, it really feels like an exercise in propaganda. The numbers are openly available, and they're not all that scary at the moment, but the media tries to tell you the opposite.

if you work an airport or port city, in a crowded place, order an n99 Cambridge mask for twenty bucks. it'll work. it'll also last, they're not single use like the paper ones. if you're immunocompromised, stay out of crowds for now. starting now. it's not hard to know when to start. just start now, there's enough sick of every kind to go around besides this one thing.

it's new but it's not new- this is a form/species of virus we've seen before. a vaccine won't take long, distribution of one may take longer. there will be people refusing to take it, of course.
...
in Washington state.
been busy. wear a mask.
look, we've just got a lot of fat people. there is a 2-3% death rate for this in healthy people, the fats are gonna take it harder.
sorry, Texas

This virus is the third largest killer of human beings, globally, this year so far, with no sign of stopping. Here's just the US chart. Some nations are doing much better, but the ones that are doing worse are doing so much worse that it makes the difference.

We should all have been masked since February.
Mandatory quarantine for all travel should have started in December.
Testing should have been ramped up everywhere by the middle of March.

We fucked up. So wear a mask. Wash your hands. Give people space.

Excess deaths are way up this year so far. It's unusual. These are likely to be in part due to untested or unrecorded covid deaths.

European deaths compared to previous years.

We've fucked up so much that it'll be 2021 at soonest before there's anything like normal living again, since we can't get people to act civilized.
It's a shame.

Right there.

We flattened the curve. It's over. Take your masks off and go back to work. We have 4 months of business to make up for and a war with China to prepare for. (Hint: One drone strike to that fucking dam would end them.)

...Of course, the unspoken bullshit about "flattening the curve" is that we can never stop doing what we did to flatten the curve or it'll jump right back up....

We've fucked up so much that it'll be 2021 at soonest before there's anything like normal living again, since we can't get people to act civilized.
It's a shame.

Well, that, and 2021 will put us past the Trump re-election, and most of this Covid bullshit is blatantly an attempt to hamper shit to make Trump look bad.

As for "civilized," I like to think we've been extremely civilized.

I haven't maced any of the little shits demanding I put on a completely useless surgical mask when I am trying to go to a store. (The local grocery stores are handing them out at the door now, claiming a nonexistant state policy requires them.)

I haven't cunt punted any of the smug Karens pulling shit like explaining how her useless homemade mask makes her better than people who know it doesn't do anything to, or demanding we stop talking about HCQ because Trump mentioned it and IT WUZ HER TURN. (But Whiteness is the real plague, so everyone clap while Antifa terrorists and feral blacks try and murder people in the street every night.)

None of my business owner friends have shot any assholes explaining that the small business they have created over the past 10 years is an acceptable loss to make some faggot in a gated community feel safe.

Hell, I'm most impressed with the people of New York, who are VERY civilized: They haven't lynched Cuomo after he killed tens of thousands of their grandparents through sheer fucking stupidity.

The Philippines, country with the highest mask wearing compliance in the world. Mask Mandate started in April.

Peru's been very mask compliant too, how are they doing? Mask Mandate started in April.

How about Mexico?

Japan?

Your magic talisman is clearly working.

Hell, I'm most impressed with the people of New York, who are VERY civilized: They haven't lynched Cuomo after he killed tens of thousands of their grandparents through sheer fucking stupidity.

That's only because people from New York City are idiots who think it was worse everywhere else. I don't know if they'd even be able to process that their city and state fucked up harder than any other state other than Jersey and more than some entire counties. Even that useless fuck Fauci, who has access to the numbers, thinks that shithole did alright. The mind boggles.

This is what is really irking me, people don't understand basic familial relationships.
Its a fucking Coronavirus. Its not HIV, its not Herpes, its a Coronavirus.

Any long term damage that comes from COVID is going to come from a severe infection restricting oxygen to the brain and/or bloodstream, so its going to happen in an overwhelming minority of patients and even then its those who were already at fucking risk and/or working with existing damage already.

It will (hopefully) come out that "BREAKING: Coranvirus COVID-19 found to extremely similar to other Coronaviruses in the Coronaviridae family; unlike HIV, Shingles or Herpes!" at which point the Soyjacks and Karens will still defend the lockdowns/mask mandates because "We just couldn't have known!"

And if those studies are based on the antibody results they're fucking worthless, because as I said they include the common cold.
The "common cold" accounts for a group of at least three virus families, most of which are Rhinoviruses, but also include at least four species of Coronaviruses and some other group I cant remember/dont care to look up.

The problem with discounting antibody/seroprevalence studies is that it assumes:
1) high level of recent infection with a weaker coronavirus species
2) no transferred immunity/resistance from a weaker coronavirus

Now I don't necessarily supporting using antibody/seroprevalence studies to guesstimate "we are X many weeks away from herd immunity" like Sweden did; but they are still a more reliable indicator of true infection lethality rate than going off only confirmed cases (which have a known symptomatic/hospitalization bias).

We've fucked up so much that it'll be 2021 at soonest before there's anything like normal living again, since we can't get people to act civilized.
It's a shame.
Nice victim-blaming, faggot.

We are under these conditions because our leaders put them on us. They had a choice to lockdown/mandate or not, and they chose to put it on us.
We didn't chose these.

These conditions end when our leaders chose to end them, or we fucking force them to.

Welcome to the end result of American schooling. I mean, sure, these people can't understand basic math, statistics, or actual science, but they do what they're told.

I remember having an argument with a teacher in 5th grade, where I was told to absolutely not read or work ahead of the rest of my classmates. Every year from entering public school, I caught multiple demerits for spending the first couple days of each semester knocking out every chapter's solo bookwork, and then reading on my own after class participation portions

That teacher knew I had aspirations for military service, and tried to frame it as a direct order when I refused; my response was essentially "military orders are meant to win wars, you just want me to stay stupid."

I spent the rest of that month in daytime detention (3hrs after lunch), and that was incidentally where I started to run with "the bad kids", a lot of whom were more like myself; they simply figured out the score early and couldn't stand being held to the lowest common denominator standards.

Being also a military brat, I was shuffled to a new school at least every other year, in several different States. They all had varying levels of the same disease, but entirely shared the same propensity to hammer down nails that stood out.

Ask me, and I'll do it just to be polite & out of respect for private-property rights (in the case of businesses or homes).

Tell me, and expect to be told to get fucked.

Because dyslexia runs in my Dad's family, my Mom taught me to read properly as early as she could, my Kindergarten teacher didn't believe I could read the titles of the books, and later teachers refused to let me read books out of the school library that were higher grade levels until I could actually demonstrate I could read them. I tended towards the same thing, gravitating to the "bad kids" that weren't really bad, just bored. Dewey was the worst thing to ever happen to the American education system. Shit, I think America had a higher literacy rate before our public system than after it.

It's the value of the Prussian system Dewey liked so much, lots of good citizens who believe what their authority figures tell them without too much questioning. It's just taken generations to work how to deal with that American tendency to tell authority figures to fuck off.

In late August it is mind boggling how anyone can make such a manifestly idiotic claim and try to do so with all evidence pointing to its unequivocal falseness.

I remember reading about the early days of the Internet becoming available for the population at large. There was this naive fantasy that the common man would soon have the entire world's information placed before them and we would enter into a new age of rationality never seen before in human history.

Instead, we have millions of people like cuddle striker who are given that unimaginable wealth of information yet they end up ignoring it all and cling to magical thinking straight out of human prehistory where all actions are either thanks to the gods being appeased or no being appeased enough.

Mask mandates are coincident with infection/death curves declining? We were right!
Mask mandates are coincident with infection/death cvurves increasing? It's all those stupid people who don't vote like me refusing to wear masks!

It doesn't matter how much public data is placed before them, years from now they will still cling to their magical belief that masks were responsible for this latest coronavirus going away.

It's a shame.

It's a shame that government blessed "protesters" "protesting" in large numbers sans masks or distancing, yet persecute people only wanting to go to church to worship. This has cost government their credibility.

Enough bullshit. Americans increasingly see the attempt by politicians to subjugate them in the name of "flattening the curve", when the politicians don't even do what they demand we do.

Funerals...no, you can't have a funeral service for your loved one! And no, you can't worship in church, much less sing! Too much chance of spreading the virus! But let the politician John Lewis die and the church is packed for his funeral! Go to CA. Nazi Newsom wants wineries/tasting rooms closed down. But HIS winery stays open.

Most deaths have been in just a few places.

Remember:

CASES DO NOT EQUATE TO HOSPITALIZATIONS. Most people never go to the hospital.

HOSPITALIZATIONS DO NOT EQUATE TO DEATHS. People usually recover.

WHEN THEY TRY TO SHOVE THE NUMBER OF "CASES" UP OUR ASSES, THEY (government and media) SOW FEAR. Why? They fear US. They fear that their lies and half-truths are now being shown for what they are - an attempt to control us. Can't do it, can they. ALL they have is law enforcement guns to support their oppressive measures. And they intend to keep fucking with us about this disease forever. Get a vaccine? "Oh, it may not work! So you can't go back to work, can't go to church, etc." It will ALWAYS be something. ALWAYS.

This thing turned all political after the first two weeks.
The logical thing to do would have been to lock everything down for two weeks, then quarantine hot spots and buffer zones. Everyone else back to work/school, with masks. NO. Didn't happen anywhere. Most governors went full Nazi, imposing a one-size-fits-all house arrest on their states, from the lightly populated rural areas to the big cities. Why? Some governors, such as Whitmer, Cuomo, and Newsom REALLY went Nazi with all their arbitrary ukases. Power tripping is fun, they have found.

Open everything back up. Everyone wears masks, does distancing. Otherwise, "they" keep fucking with us at their peril. "They" have no credibility. "They" no longer have our trust.

The Declaration of Independence says that government derives their just powers from the consent of the governed. Do you believe government has acted justly throughout this ChiCom Flu thing? If not, why continue to consent to having this government "govern"? Elections are coming up. Some governors may be facing recall.

I spent several years living in Asia. Saw a lot of people wearing masks. Lot of people in Wuhan wore masks as a matter of course. Yet the flu spread. Masks don't seen real effective, do they. Seems like they're just a visible sign that we accept "their" bullshit.

That's Europe, though.
Anyway, masks or not seems to be of dubious usefulness. In Germany, few wear masks in public. The parks are full of people, with people just distancing between the groups, but not more than usual. The gyms are open. People wear masks in shops (half of them pulled down below their noses) and pubs when leaving their place to take a leak or go out, but other than that? With this kind of behaviour, masks are kinda sorta useless, especially when the newest horror story of AEROSOLS STAY IN ROOMS FOR HOURS is true. Right now we're experiencing an increase in positive tests again. However, it is oddly hard to just find the number of daily or weekly tests done, and the positive rate. Nobody prints the raw numbers, there's always just the blabbering around it and the spin. Apparently, positive rate is still less than 1%. Increased from 0.6% five weeks ago.
But exponential increases, COVID's blowing up WE WILL ALL DIE? Nah, at least not here, not yet.

I just don't get what's so different here. Is our government lying about the numbers? Is everyone else lying about the numbers? Is the arische Herrenrasse simply superior? Well, yes, but we barely have any of those left. We didn't react particularly quick, or coordinated among all the states. I'd be really interested in a true, honest, full investigation and study after the fact, one without bias or bullshit. Of course, that won't happen, but it would be nice. I just wanna know.

/edit: Today in the gym I overheard a guy talking about how he had it. Was confined in his room for like 10 days, bored out of his mind. Lost sense of smell and taste, apparently, but the first thing he did after being allowed out again officially is set the alarm to early morning and go jogging, and then work out in the gym for hours. Without a mask, of course. Didn't seem to have affected that dude all that much.
