Just a Wisconsin Moment. You may remember Khari Sanford. About a month before George Floyd, he gunned down 2 white SJW college professors in a roadside ditch, leading to exactly zero riots and no social unrest.
He's notable in part because his victims had been paying for him to live with their daughter at an Airbnb. He also had memorable quotes on his Facebook page like this:
“we gon change this world, cause it’s time to let our diversity and youth shine over all oppressive systems and rebuild our democracy??.”
Anyhoo, despite the community's indifference over losing a few of it's own to this fine social justice activist, law enforcement finally got around to sending him to trial.
A few things:
- He's being charged with first degree homicide. Only took them 5 months to bring charges, but okay.
- His has a good attorney who's charged other clients $400 an hour. But his family is poor, someone's funding his defense.
- In that article, his lawyer is quoted as saying the state presented no physical evidence tying him to the crime.
Have a strange feeling this kid is about to walk.

That's why M193 defeats steel where M855 may not despite M855 being a light armor piercing round. There are trade offs with body armor. The only way to get ultra lightweight armor that defeats the widest spectrum of threats is to pay. The compromise is better than ever before as materials science advances. Hesco L210s are multi hit Special Threat rated on common 7.62x39 and 5.56 rounds (except only 1 round of 7.62x39 API), only weigh 5.5lbs, and only cost $199 a plate. They're about 40% more expensive than equivalent AR500 steel plates, but they're around 40% lighter as well and they will stop more types of rounds. You get into diminishing returns as you pay for lighter and lighter weight plates.
Ceramic is not the delicate flower it is made out to be. Yes, you do not want to be running cracked ceramic plates if you can help it. We used to toss our flacks off of 7 tons all the time. Your average infantryman beats the piss out of their plates and cracks have to be everywhere. You can find youtube videos of guys putting rounds in the immediate area of previous hits on surplus ESAPIs. The point of the ceramic is to dump as much of the kinetic energy of the bullet as it can while also deforming it so it can be caught by layers of UHMWPE, or a soft armor, that backs it. Crunched up ceramic can do that to a diminished degree. Don't throw around your plate carrier like an asshole.
You don't want to run with cracked ceramic plates, but it isn't a death sentence.

Any idea what distance they were at? My groups are nothing to brag about, but theirs look like shit.
Edit: TBF, getting trigger time with ammo so scarce these days isn't easy. Every 9mm round I practice with feels like I'm borrowing against the future.

That's good to know about the ceramics not being fragile. I'm not careful with my shit and was always paranoid that i'd break a set. Maybe the fear is from the dragonskin bullshit?

Authorities say 19-year old Khari Sanford and 17-year old Ali'Jah Larrue kidnapped Potter and Carre from their home in March, with Sanford shooting them. Police say the victims were found in the Arboretum.
Last week, Larrue's mother, Alice Larrue, participated in a rally calling for defunding the same police department that arrested her son. Dragonskin had problems with their ceramic de-laminating in the heat. Like hot Iraqi summer in a vehicle heat. Not only would the disks de-laminate, but whatever they were using to string them up would also fall apart and the small disks would pile up at the bottom of the vest iirc.
I really want to reiterate that you should take care of your ceramic plates. It doesn't sound like you're an LE guy who can just get new ones if they show a crack on the yearly x-ray. All I'm saying is that it isn't a death sentence if you bump them. Yes, kevlar does go bad. Humidity as you mention is a contributing factor and @Meat Target pointed out wear from use earlier as the most common. UV will degrade, but who is leaving their armor outside of a carrier in the sun? Plus it probably has covering on it. Heat can degrade certain types as well.
