I've been keeping up with Criken for ages. He, bedbananas, and tomatogaming were all going to share a gaming show on roosterteeth together called Sideshow or something and even did a few lets plays with the guys, but either they got sick of Criken and co.'s constant and frankly autistic roleplaying or the deal just fell through because Criken can't commit to big projects. They each made an announcement video and that was the beginning and end of sideshow. Kind of. I guess they did one podcast that was immediately deleted, possibly for "legal reasons". Whatever the case it was incredibly odd.

The links to each, I can't remember what order you're meant to watch them in and I cannot be bothered to.

So on the topic of Sideshow Tomato revealed the reason why it died immediately on a stream a while back. So they wanted to form a group because YouTube was having it's advert death period and groups find it easier to get sponsorships they wanted it to be called Sideshow but assumed it was taken so they asked RT to do some checking, RT said it was fine and kept reassuring them that they were in the clear. Criken and co release their announcement trailers etc and down the line they do their podcast thing with one of them playing "my summer car" an hour before the podcast went live they got a Cease and Desist email for the use of Sideshow and they were upset that RT didn't do their jobs and lied to them and so they just decided to shut it down and just lean more into twitch for revenue than rely on RT.

Additiinal Fact: Tomato got VAC banned when making the Sideshow videos because he used a cheat engine on a non-VAC server to get some of the sped up effects in the videos. Turns out even if you turn off VAC on your own server you can still get VAC banned for cheating.

Yssa, the creator of Recorded by Arizal -- explains who the show is made for and why it's "important" .

Long story short, it's basically just her stalling out and it's just a case of non-cis-white-guys want shows too so now there's competition and they want to try and justify that they may not have a story in mind but did it anyway.

Honestly, when are these people gonna get it through their heads that having an idea is one thing -- but execution is a whole other?
What these idiots don't seem to understand is that nothing was essentially wrong with how creators managed to attract an audience in the first place. The internet back then was an escape for everyone, but ever since retarded moral crusaders got the bright idea that "racists" and "bigots" shouldn't be catered to, any and all creative freedom, edginess and out of the box entertainment has been corporatized. That was the trap, the hidden knife, the poison laced with how big tech and government have effectively neutered the web.

Representation is nice and all, but, in all seriousness, is that really what we're asking for in entertainment? Is that really important? It's like the new season of a sitcom and they decided to add young cousin Steve into the cast to drum up ratings.

It feels fake and gay.

Filipinos don't give a shit about this, and they are usually up in arms for anything remotely Filipino.

Shows how much this has succeeded.

Here's the thing about RT: everything they do is nowhere near as popular as their fans think it is. Why else do you think they went as hard as they did to make Gen Lock a success?

I suppose being an originally underground media company was part of what weakened their start.

Ironically, mainstream couldn't feasibly and realistically stomach most of their content, hence, why the need to sterilize it for ad friendliness.

Thus, we need to ask ourselves these poignant set of questions.

When you think of animation. When you think of anime. When you think of cartoons. When you think of any big names in the game, who's gonna pop into your head?

Warner Brothers, Disney, Pixar, Nickelodeon.

Then, there's the more obscure, but no less renowned.

Gainax, Toei, Studio Pierrot, Shout Factory, Hanna Barbera, freaking Ruby Spears, 20th Century Fox.

Then, when you ask some rando about what Rooster Teeth even is, how do you think they'll likely respond 80% of the time?

"What's that?"

"I'm not gay, jackass."

Red vs Blue was their flagship next to RWBY. It was arguably what put them on the map. But, it was still, unfortunately, an underground thing. They managed to make it mainstream, but how much of an impact does it really have? You can quote the shit out of it, sure, but overall, it becomes easily forgettable in lieu of other titles. You'll always come back to old school stuff like Yu Yu Hakusho.

Why do you think Boruto doesn't have as much of an impact as Naruto? Sequel fatigue, people were done with Naruto, and most simply tuned in for Naruto and Sasuke.

The other reason is that the new batch of kids are forgettable.

Other than that, almost nobody cares about RWBY anymore when I last checked the otaku scene in my neck of the woods.

There were cosplay competitions years ago in my country that had them playing all the girls, but after that? The novelty wore off. Old school and timeless overrules them. It isn't memorable or impactful enough. Hell, a bunch of guys still cosplay as Lelouch as Zero to this day.

I’m not sure how many times this comes up. But it always rears its head.

Seeing that the video only talked about their main YT channel, I checked the subscribers on their LetsPlay channel, which I thought was doing pretty good for itself.

The channel launched on April 15th, 2013. In just over a year and a half, in late November 2014, it hit three million. How long did it take to hit four?

...They haven’t yet. Nearly six full years later and they’re largely stuck at 3.85M with no growth in sight. The channel has stagnated for years, looks like whatever they were trying to pull off by hiring Fiona really, really didn’t work.

Nice of Rooster Teeth to fuck over new talent. Just another example of their incompetent fuckups I suppose.

And look where that landed them, a financial flop that got shunted onto HBO Max where almost no one will give a shit when other better shows are around. And those shows, outside of the pre-existing stuff, tend to have mixed reception at best.

Makes me wonder why AT&T just doesn't take the assets and run at this point.

They probably will. As bad as it is, thanks to its fanbase RWBY is the only thing even remotely worth saving, and they can just shove that off as a CR Original and toss everything else in the garbage.

The LP stuff can continue easily enough without official RT backing, thanks to COVID they’ve all been streaming remotely anyway.

I'd say a big thing about RWBY's tanking in popularity was how people came for Monty's action scenes (hell, some of the most viewed videos on RT's RWBY channel are a RvB scene Monty animated, the Red trailer, the first RWBY episode, the Yellow trailer, and the White trailer in the top 15 most viewed), and in 2014/2015, RWBY was about to hit the height of its popularity...and then Monty died, and the potential that RWBY had went down in flames.

Reminds me of how kids media and daytime media in the 80s and 90s was preachy and moralistic to appease Christian soccer moms.

Back then you had start up networks like Fox who were willing to take a risk and buck the sanitized media and subscription networks like HBO that prided themselves on edgy adult aimed content.

Now though every company is towing the line even as corporations start axing woke divisions for being money sinks.

I’m not sure how many times this comes up. But it always rears its head.
Yeah I said before DC Comics has it's ips to protect it and hopefully to stave off the reaper's axe but what the fuck does RT have?

Wasn't Gen:Lock a catastrophic failure?

Really don't get AT&T's gameplan here.

It's moreso RT's plan, but yeah, Gen:LOCK sucked ass, and rather then pull the plug on this money pit, they made a deal with HBO Max to produce another season, and there hasn't even been a fart about production, not even during this year's RTX or whatever the fuck it was.

IDK given the bloodbaths at DC and other Warner subsidiaries I think AT&Ts got something to do with this but I could be wrong.

In the next example of trying to build a bigger franchise. https://twitter.com/calxiyn/status/1298312623482699776?s=21

😴 Can't bring myself to care one iota about Gen whatever. The characters are forgettable, the plot is too generic, the villains were too cringy and cliche, the heroes are...well, imagine feeling a special kind of annoyed looking at something every single time.

I mean, try comparing this to Gen:LOCK.

Toonami aired Gen:Lock sometime in the past year because they could air it for peanuts due to all the corporate mergers, so I decided to watch it since it happened to be on before shows I actually cared about. It was laughably bad on just about every level. Cliche doesn't even begin to describe it, really. In the episode where all the multiculti pilots show up to see who's going to pilot the mechs, there's a single white guy in the group.

Guess which one turns out to be working for the bad guys?

They also tried to do the whole "make it look like anime" thing where they gave the dialogue scenes a low frame rate, which only made it look awful. If the entire show had the smooth animation of the action scenes, it would be a little better, but not much. Still wouldn't compensate for all the other problems it had.

About the only good part of the show was David Tennant, who did a fine job hamming it up throughout the show's run; his was the only character I could actually tolerate. Everyone else was either barely emoting (cough cough Michael B. Jordan) or giving a passable performance.

At this point, I really can't remember anything from the show. Nothing's stuck in my head about it at all, almost like it never existed in the first place. Even if they have that deal to produce a second season, it wouldn't surprise me if that got axed in some kind of overall company shakeup. It's a nothing property.

The second season is probably going to be a thing still since they have that HBO Max deal, but that’ll be it. It’ll most likely be a shorter season that doubles as a finale to the series, because the writing’s already on the wall and has been for months now.
