Why do these people care so much about this? A "hex" for them is just mixing period blood and salt in a jar. It's really not that important.
Simple. Three reasons:
1) The "You can't tell me what to do! Everything is valid uwu" ideology of witchblr. Part of the appeal of this "ideology" is that you can make up whatever you want and nobody will call you on it because all practices are legitimate your craft is yours uwu. So when someone tells them they're wrong it doesn't work like that they feel the need to insert how valid they are.
2) On the other side there is the "Its real and valid!" part. If magic is real and every spell you make has real effects, then hurting people with magic would be unethical. So they have to pretend like a threat to curse is a serious threat like anything else, because magic is totally super real.
3) Power. Curses are basically revenge fantasies for edgy tumbrl kids (with the larger "you are a magical goddess!" thing being a power fantasy in general). Then the second group comes along and says "Your revenge fantasies are dumb" and they have to go and defend how totally legit they are because they're hurt so bad and the people they're cursing totally deserve it so its OK.
