They don't have to. Love, especially the first one, is a powerful experience. You lose interest in other girls, she is on your mind all the time, everything is butterflies, etc. At least on the beginning. And that's enough to make you feel like you are in relationship, or what you imagine a romantic relationship would look like. Even though the actual experience, as in activities, worries, hopes you experience are different, a lot of defining effects and feelings are common.
