I do remember there was a whole episode where everyone found out James had been set up to marry a Jesse doppleganger by his rich family when he was younger and he ran away from home. Then the rest of Team Rocket and his family tried to force him to marry her again (Team Rocket because of the money) and the rest of the episode is him trying to escape. The explicit reason is because she was too controlling, but it was very easy to interpret him as having other motivations, if you know what I mean.
