'No Stupid Questions' (NSQ) Internet & Technology Edition

I did and I’m still getting ads 🤷🏼‍♀️
What browser? I've not long switched to uBlock in Chrome and get zero ads, without faffing with settings. The "block element" function is a godsend, too; much better than ABP's.

I have chrome too.

How the fuck do I view the full text of the notifications sent by programs in Windows 10?

THAT'S WORSE THAN NOTHING!

Does anyone know of any good cleaners for CD's and DVD's? Or are they all faulty and will fuck up the discs more than they already were?

I ask because there's a retro game store that has these machines that clean and buffer the discs to make them look brand new-ish, and I asked if anything like that was available to buy and the guy behind the counter told me "oh you're better off just bringing it to us instead of cleaning it yourself, you'll run the risk of scratching them more with the cleaners that are out there"

Assuming you're just talking about cleaning discs and not resurfacing them a la Disc Doctor, then there's not a big secret or tool to cleaning a disc. Use water, preferably distilled, and a cloth, preferably not one made from a fibrous material like paper or cotton that might scratch the disc. If you wear glasses or know someone who does, the cleaning kits you often get from glasses stores when you buy a pair are perfect since those have distilled water and fiber-free cloths. When wiping the disc, wipe from the center of the disc to the edge and back; don't use circular motions or wipe "around" the disc, because any scratches you do introduce will cause less trouble if they're perpendicular to the tracks of data on the disc rather than parallel to them. Wipe dry with a similar cloth, let dry thoroughly before using it again, and there you go.

So here's two I've been curious about, and hopefully are dumb enough for the thread.

1: I know for powerful PCs it's worth to building over buying a prebuild, but is the same true for low spec machines? When I'm saying low spec meaning a POS' that basically is just for browsing Facebook, Youtube, and all that shit.

2: Are there wireless headphones that hookup via the 3.5mm jack? I've seen USB ones (I believe the PlayStation ones are like that) and I would seriously consider any headphones that work similarly but with a 3.5mm jack as that would personally be more useful for me than either USB or Bluetooth. I'm taking a wild guess not considering I haven't found anything like that, but hey, figure it's worth asking before I give up on that retarded quest.

If you want a hobby/passion project like LGR.

There are bluetooth adapters that connect to the 3.5 jack. You still need a wireless protocol to use.

Does anyone know a easy way/app to add and write subtitles on a video with no watermarks at the end?

Lower-end commodity PCs work on pretty low margins already. With a custom-built machine you will still have more options with regards to upgradability - you can get a CPU with an integrated GPU for now and then spring for a dedicated video card later if you decide you want it, for example - but if that's not so important to you then a cheap Chinese box with limited upgradability might actually be a bit cheaper than whatever you can kit together.

Either Handbrake

or Subtitle Burner, which is much simpler to use

Both ran with default font settings using youtube auto generated subtitles.

CPU running at 84 C in the middle of Chromium Compile, is this high enough to warrant a new cooler?

Wait what? You want headphones with a wireless ADAPTER that is powered by a 3.5mm jack? Or do you want wireless headphones that can also be plugged into a 3.5mm jack and work like wired headphones? That one is easy, there's a lot of those, the first one is weird as hell.

If you want a cheap PC buy used, you can pick up a perfectly fine Dell or HP office machine for $100, it will likely have an i5, 8GB of ram and run on integrated graphics. Throw in a low end graphics card*, maybe more RAM and you have a PC for gaming as well. Then an SSD, a better power supply for a better graphics card, point is that you can build on it over time.

*a card that doesn't need additional power connectors, their custom PSUs won't have those and it won't supply more power than necessary.

If you want to write your own subtitles go with Aegisub, it's easy to use. If you want to remove "Buy NordVPN blah blah" from downloaded subtitles then just open the .srt in notepad and remove it, it's just a text file with time codes.

You can also pack subtitles(soft subs) into the MP4/MKV container without re-encoding so they can be turned on or off, mp4toolbox or mkvtoolnix might be your best bet.

If you just want a media player or TV to pick up and show the subtitles it's usually as easy as making sure that the subtitles have the exact same name as the video like this:
blah.1983.1080p.Yify.[www.bongland.zone].mp4
blah.1983.1080p.Yify.[www.bongland.zone].srt
and that they're both in the same directory, they can then be turned on or off like normal subtitles on the TV or media player.

The former, a wireless headphone with a receiver that plugs into a 3.5 jack, something in line with the GameCube's Wavebird Controller if you're familiar with that. I could go with just some standard bluetooth or USB wireless set, but it wouldn't necessarily work with everything I have, but 3.5 probably would. Yeah, I know, it's a stupid thing, I've tried looking for something like that for a little bit sometime ago and couldn't find anything like it. So I imagine nothing like that probably exists, or at minimum's very rare and probably overly expensive, but figured can't hurt to ask before I completely give up on the idea though. However I'll keep the latter idea in mind, that would probably work for me quite nicely, so thanks!

Eh, thanks for thinking of that, but I've already heard that, and me, and my family for that matter, are quite paranoid with used tech, we prefer to have shit under warranty.

I guess to further clarify, this wouldn't for me, I built a gaming PC a year ago, and I still have my old HP prebuild POS, I'm very well off on PCs for myself. The reason why I say I want a bare bone one is it would literally be just a facebook and news browsing machine most likely for someone other than me, literally anything more would probably be not worth the investment. Personally doubt I'd go though the effort even if there's fairly favorable returns, but it's just a thing on my mind that I was curious about.

A DVD isn't read by any player. Other DVDs stored in the same place play, and I see nothing physically wrong. So what's up?

(the DVD in question used to play OK)

Here's an Amazon search for "headphone jack to bluetooth adapter" which looks like it has some products which will do the job. One problem is that it requires power to create a Bluetooth signal, but normal headphone jacks are not powered, so the device has to have its own battery and that will drive up the price.

Disc rot? If you hold the disc up to a lamp or bright window, can you see little dots of light coming through the media?

Unfortunately, unlike surface scratches, there's no getting your data back with disc rot. You'll have to hope that disc is still in print by the distributor.
