Most people do something like that but some like putting up a show, getting creative or want to do finding out together with people they care about. Gender reveal parties aren't that common but some people enjoy them. Other people also enjoy leaving the finding out to when the baby arrives or parents keeping a little secret from everybody. Generally people just care about gender of their future child. If for nothing else it one of few aspects you can find out about your baby. Personality, looks and so on aren't that clear till much later.Whatever happened to announcing simply "It's a girl" or "It's a boy" and then having a baby party where the sex is already known?

This is almost the definition of false equivalence. Like sort of “Hey we’re having a boy/girl, we are welcoming a new person into our lives an naming them (insert name) we want all of you to know and appreciate our child.” As opposed to “Hey new character and it’s Mario in drag!”.
