The US and Ireland have a weird obsession with the subject of abortion. In the rest of the Western world, it's simply a non-issue. Personally, I blame the fixation on the level of influence religious fanatics still wield in both countries.
Nah.
In European countries, the pro-abortion fanatics of the "Zero restrictions during all nine months, and possibly not even after birth!" and "Yass kween slay, be proud of all your abortions sistaah!" variety are fringe elements on the political spectrum.
In the US, that's effectively the position of one of the two major parties.
In most EU countries, society has reached a compromise on abortion along the lines of "Not officially legal, but also not punishable under the law as long as it's in the first few weeks and/or certain special preconditions and formalities are met". Which is to say, a compromise that no-one is happy with, but that everyone (except some politically powerless fringe elements of die-hard Catholics and die-hard feminists) can grudgingly live with.
The US Republican position is a lot closer to this EU-style compromise than the US Democrat position.
This is one area of policy where the "US Left is like the EU Right" meme simply does not hold up.
