Final Fantasy 16 - It's Dragon's Dogma 2

4, but that game had pretty weak characterizations in general. The twins sucked, Rosa sucked, Rydia was marginally less terrible but still paper-thin. They fixed it with the next one, though.

I don't remember which ones I've played pre-7 but all them warriors of light looked mighty flat. However when they released the rest of the games weren't that heavy on story either were they?

FF4 also came out in 1991, when stories in Japanese games were barely stepping out of their cribs. FF4 was all about Cecil's hero's journey, and the whole kerfuffle with him being part Lunarian and Golbez's brother was a hell of a twist by '91 video game standards.

Rydia's whole deal with growing from being a child into an adult over the course of like maybe a week (in-game time) and then later having Edge flirt with her and nobody really thinks twice about it is super creepy in retrospect but whatever. Like they say that time flows differently in the Land of Monsters but don't really go into it so there's no indication on whether or not Rydia still has the mind of a child, or if it's a deal where you go down there and you can spend years but if someone is waiting outside of the cave for like an hour they'll have just perceived an hour to have passed, while you've lived a massive chunk of your life because of how time works. But it's a 1991 RPG so I'm probably thinking more about it than the developers did at the time

also, the original translation, lol

I'm pretty sure it's established that it was years for Rydia in the Feymarch, so she is an adult. Edge didn't know her as a child so it's not really that weird. It would have been funny for Cecil to comment on it, though.

They tried with 2, but it wasn't great. 3 played things pretty safe. 4 I've commented on, but story clearly was becoming more of a focus the whole time, and it really started to pay off with 5 and 6.

Yeah, it's very much a product of time and circumstance, and there are some decent story beats, but the characters themselves are visibly hacked together from other, better characters. They don't hold up on their own, and they especially don't hold up to what came after.

Tbh I never exactly knew why Kain was even there, other than to just simply give Cecil someone to have a betrayal/redemption arc with

and according to the Wiki, it's literally the story of Cain & Abel from the Bible, so that makes sense

Very few FF games really justify every cast member tbh. It's usually just to make X thing happen at the right time.
Hell, a lot of the better ones really don't bother. 6 has a very large cast list, many of whom have no direct connection to the main conflict; 7's side characters are actually pretty weak in many ways and a lot of them just tag along 'cuz; 4's cast members die off a lot so your journey can continue.

If I can't name my own character I deserve all the disagree rates. Everything about that trailer wants to go back to the original though.

I think the action style of play is the new norm. I think 7 remake did it okay in that the character wasn't standing around while waiting for atb. Certainly it can be evolved.

I know you're right, I have to give up thinking there's gonna be a turn based FF ever again. Guess I'll be stuck playing old JRPGs while you guys have fun with the new stuff :( Well regardless this is a ps5 exclusive and I wouldn't even buy a ps5 until way way later so I can't even pretend I would if it were turn based.

There will never be a mainline turn based FF again. Try World of Final Fantasy. I know it looks like the stupidest babby shit, but my wife's best friend feels the same way about turn-based, and she loved it.

I played it, it was really fun. Simplistic but you know it kinda is a baby game. Still the gameplay was thoroughly enjoyable.

I like that they're apparently going back to a more contemporary fantasy setting instead of the neo futuristic shit that's been going on since FF13.
Final Fantasy 15 was modern day with magic and weird creatures, except you're a saudi prince.

Like most of the time spent was like driving around and exploring a national park.

4's cast members die off a lot so your journey can continue.
It's kinda funny you mention that because only one cast member actually dies (Tellah). Everyone else turns out okay, including Yang and Cid who seemingly blow themselves up but then you find them later having survived. And in some versions you can bring them to the final dungeon if you so please. IV has the illusion of party members dying, but it never commits to it most of the time.

He would be right if it was FF2, every guest character you meet managed to die except the pirate chick and some cowardly prince.

The futuristic or modern stuff is cool too but it's definitely time to go back to basics.

It's a little silly of course. Like the twins just get saved by their Elder. I guess he took his sweet time.
I am 100% fine with them coming back because they are kids. And I was fine with Edward and Yang living because their deaths were ambiguous anyway. Like child Rydia's.

Kinda glad only Tellah died. Because only his death was epic (using Meteor without enough MP). And I agree that too much death is repetitious.
Galuf's was a little silly for me because not only did I know he was gonna die when his HP went below zero but you get a replacement right away.
Honestly, as cliched a pick as it is, Aeris had the best and most meaningful death in the series. I'd give Tidua a nod too but he comes back.

Apparently 16 is being done almost entirely with 14's dev team and Nomura hasn't touched it since he's still busy with 7 and someone else is now handling Kingdom hearts and some other other other unrelated team is doing shit with the Mana series.

So if it's being handled by 14's team the characters are going to look dull at the start because you'll be able to dress them up all fancy later in the game.
