No, this is not correct. TV shows have really given a false perception of DS ppl and their abilities. Maybe 1-5% of DS adults can live semi-independent but still with daily supervision. For about four months in college I worked in a group home network that was for adults with DS. They were dumped on Medicaid programs because they were too difficult to care for at home. They all required 24/7 supervision.

So Basically 24/7 you had 2-4 adults of normal intelligence devoted to caring for one adult of an IQ below 60. Some patients had 1:1 staff others required more. It can be argued that this is what a caring society should do but it’s not exactly a sustainable model long term if there is an increase in the number of patients. I remember thinking it was a surreal thing for 4 normal adults to devote their working lives to just keeping one adult alive/not hurting himself. I have no better solution, just stating the situation.

BTW, when you see a DS person out working there is also a paid staff member supervising from a distance. People might think the DS person is independently working but for insurance reasons alone a staff member of normal intelligence is always there supervising them.

About half the patients in our network still had family, many that loved them, but they were just to difficult and dangerous to care for at home. I remember a sweet an 5 foot tall single/divorced mother and her 6’0 300 lb son that would rage if you didn’t let him masturbate 5 times a day. Yes, a friend of mine had a healthy, but very premature baby (29 weeks) the month in the NICU was close to a million. Can you imagine how much all the long surviving potato babies cost? The reason you only see these type of DS people now is that autism has taken over all services that the ones who werent shining examples used to have. We have moved into a society that feeds the current fad of autism, just like was done with ADHD in the past, and hidden examples of people doing worse with other disorders.

When I do services in residential schools most of my clients are low functioning DS. The higher functioning ones really will also have issues with money and other things that will never let them live indepdently. And the ones you see working in jobs are probly there via the DVR which means they make maybe a quarter an hour.

• For juveniles in custody of the Department of Children's Services, including removing the current option to petition a judge for permission.
• While there is an exception to the restrictions if a woman's life is in danger, there are no exceptions for rape or incest.

The word "doula" is Greek, and it's a birth assistant, present to keep her and her family comfortable during labor and the post-partum period, and may also perform household chores. FTR, both of the births I knew of at my old hospital where a doula was present ended in a c-section. They are not allowed to perform any medical duties; that's the territory of the midwife, and a CNM is going to be a nurse with a master's degree in midwifery. S/he (yes, there are male midwives) usually works in a hospital or an attached birthing center, although they do occasionally do home births.

Honestly I've never seen any of this done to the severely retarded children I worked with. We had one 20 year old that just would sit in back of class and do her business while screaming for snacks. If she got a snack she stopped, it was obviously a learned behavior.

I can vouch for this as well. I have seen so many fucked up tards come from care homes, some with conditions related to neglect, and once they're in the hospital they cannot require more than 1:1 attention so they end up in restraints. That is usually how they end up for long periods of their life because DS is correlated with so many other serious health conditions.

Also: when the DS adults are doing their supervised job, they are usually not doing a good job either. I know someone who spent a few decades at a job that employed exceptional individuals. The places that hire them get money from charity or government programs to pay the employer and the worker for their job. After the exceptional person leaves their shift, the supervisor usually has to do the job over again. There was a lot of outrage about tards being paid below minimum wage awhile back, people had no idea that they would never have jobs at all under normal circumstances. I completely agree that without abortion there wouldn't be a way for society to care for a lot of these people.
