Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

Most of the people I know of various ages, that didn't give one single fuck about Corona Chan from the beginning still do not care.
BUT then there's one guy. He has gone from cautious to relaxed to batshit crazy. Like, follows non-masked shoppers around and glares at them. He started getting aggressively anti-common-sense about a month ago. Did something mainstream media change at that time that I missed, or did it just take this long for my aquantance to flip?

It's just like religion. You have to BELIEVE with 100% conviction that what you're doing is the right, honest way, otherwise the vast sacrifices you've made to stay faithful weren't worth it. The more this goes on, I worry, the more people will hold steady to the mask totems and distancing rituals.

This shit is fucking with my head. You cite sources explaining that corona is a nothing burger, and people say that your source could have been paid by conservative lobbyists. WTF? So every scientist that isn't a doomer is also a Trump supporter? Everyone is acting like absolute religious zealots.

There's a reason why BLM came right out and said that objective facts are "based on white supremacy."

It doesn't matter how many black people actually die at the hands of cops compared to white people.

I literally had a friend tell me when I was giving statistics that I "was dehumanizing people."

Hell, it's been true on Twitter for years, but just this year permeated the mainstream.

Lol... That skateboarder video was gold.

I went to the outside-LA-limits beach, after not going for about a month. nobody had masks, and you wouldn't have known Covid was a thing. The big news was the smoky skies and the latest earthquake.

I came home and found a "For Sale" sign in my neighbor's yard. The dad over there's been screaming at his sons a lot, so maybe he lost his job or something. That makes three homes for sale in about a three block radius. The third home was having a yard sale and I stopped to chat, and they said they're leaving because they're done with the stupid political stuff and moving back to the midwest to live near the kids' grandparents.

There was also a small group of protestors with "Recall Newsom" signs at the shopping center. :)

Maybe he's just had so much of this bullshit he has indeed flipped.

Am I wrong in having the impression that overall fewer and fewer people give a fuck about this ChiCom Flu farce anymore? Don't watch TV or read local paper, so depend on KFers to provide that sort of info.

Seriously, all these bastards who still have their states under any sort of house arrest need to just call it a day. Some may be facing recalls. Some may not be re-elected. And the next time something big and bad hits "they" shouldn't count on much support or compliance from people. Can't fool all of the people all of the time, and now the bullshit detector is at very high PRF (intensive scanning mode, if you will).

Saw something notable this morning in the paper (Epoch Times). They were asking readers if they would get the ChiCom Flu vaccine. One lady said she wouldn't get it until Bill Gates and his family, Sauci, Birx and all those who have mandated and carried out the house arrests, and their families, get the vaccine first. Makes sense to me. Yeah, just see how many people get the vaccine if any of the people mentioned have a bad reaction or die from it. I sure as hell have no intention of being anyone's guinea pig. So, Bill, you get that shot first. Hope the vaccine works better than Windows. 🖕

Yeah, saw a guy at the commissary yesterday wearing a "Recall Newsom" mask. Complimented his mask, he complimented my "Wearing this is stupid. Think for yourself" mask. He and his wife have signed a recall petition. Like to think there will be enough signatures for a recall election. Newsom deserves recall far more than Gray Davis did.

Line for food Monday was pretty long again. A friend told me of a neighbor in the hospitality industry, a big one here. Been out of work for five months now, "big" unemployment checks gone. Neighbor is talking about moving due to not being able to afford rent. Believe there's a moratorium on evictions for now, but all that does is kick the can down the road. That rent will still have to be paid. Wish God would make Newsom feel all the worry, anxiety, fear, outright desperation and anger of those suffering because he won't let them go to work. Don't believe God will forget this when Newsom stands before the Pearly Gates. Newsom should drink all the hot drinks he can, because the lowest circle of hell is cold.

Nah that is just a very common way to dodge the issue, it is something that Global Warming Alarmists have done for ages.

I think that's generally true. Most of my CA friends, except the nurse & wife, and one guy whose grandma died, think the virus has been way overblown and have said they're just wearing masks to be nice to those who are more scared, and to not cause problems for the poor minimum-wage cashiers. We continue to worry about our older parents but the parents themselves are all pro-Trump and are convinced this is political. I have some older co-workers who scream about masks online but they're all in self-imposed lock-downs so their opinions are kinda moot.

983 people in a state of 17 million tested positive on Friday, and I'm supposed to care.
You are, that's how the media fear machine works and how it's been since the start of things. They spit out numbers without any context. "Hundreds of new cases in New York on Friday" (example) sounds scary but in reality it's "hundreds of new cases in a population of millions" and doesn't even say how bad those cases are. Like out of those 983 cases, between 3 and 6 of them will die and maybe a few dozen will be hospitalized. Which gives you another scary number to throw out. "Five dead, fifty hospitalized due to COVID-19 in New York on Friday".

We can play this game with all sorts of causes of injury, illness, and death. "Dozens dead, hundreds hospitalized due to the flu in New York." "Over thirty dead, hundreds hospitalized due to peaceful protests against systemic injustice in New York on Friday."

I've definitely noticed this. Most people I know still mostly comply with restrictions but have started to bed the rules more recently. One friend in particular who was having a meltdown over it early on just went on holidays with a group of people just as the numbers are going back up and restrictions being reintroduced. People who were outraged that the government weren't being harsh enough a few months ago just want things to reopen so they can get on with their lives. I'll admit it, I was pretty worried early on, now I just want to see my friends again. I'll wear a mask, whatever, but cops in train stations making sure you have an acceptable reason to travel is too much.

The initial panic was understandable because it did look a lot scarier then based on the inflated death rates and hysterical reports of young healthy people in ICU, now we know the odds are overwhelmingly in your favour unless you have one foot in the grave already.

People are also realising you can't replace time. Not just young people who don't want to spend their fun years cooped up inside not achieving or experiencing anything, older people and high risk groups don't want to spend whatever time they have left effectively under house arrest. There comes a point where you have to ask yourself what kind of life are you saving by doing this, and a lot of people are deciding they want take the risk to live it rather than just exist, indefinitely.

I witnessed the same thing earlier this summer. A colleague needed me to sub for him at an event. When I got there, hardly anyone appeared to be following either the state's COVID guidelines or the event host's specific guidlines. NGL, that scared the crap out of me enough that I ended up getting my COVID test two weeks later just to make sure nobody passed it to despite my taking what precautions I could that day.

Am I wrong in having the impression that overall fewer and fewer people give a fuck about this ChiCom Flu farce anymore? Don't watch TV or read local paper, so depend on KFers to provide that sort of info.
I've avoided the news for quite some time because of the constant doompilling and I've even started reading less in the newspaper once it started including articles about white privilege in nearly every section. What little I may read about current happenings these days is to see if there's anything worth sharing here.

That said, I have two main concerns about COVID:
  • When, if ever, will existing state restrictions end? And,
  • What is the likelihood of a resurgence of COVID during the coming winter?
Apart from that, I care mostly about taking whatever precautions I need to when I'm out and about. I don't worry about anything else because I can't control what the people around me do. However, I've heard people claiming COVID is going to get worse this winter even though they've offered no sort of reasoning to back up the claim.

We continue to worry about our older parents but the parents themselves are all pro-Trump and are convinced this is political.
My parents also feel it's political, but they're pro-Biden. Voting preferences aside, I think many people agree that COVID has become so politicized that we may never know the full truth about COVID and its overall impact.

You are, that's how the media fear machine works and how it's been since the start of things. They spit out numbers without any context.
Not only that, but they blindly cite raw numbers without context to keep people in a constant state of fear, uncertainty, and doubt. My biggest example is when a day's increase form the previous day is because of prior cases that weren't previously recorded. So, the news will report, "We had 1000 cases today, up from 500 yesterday," even though half of those 1000 cases might be positive test results from prior days that somehow never got reported until now  . the media seems reluctant to admit when the rates for both new cases and deaths decrease and even do so rather begrudgingly.

So, Bill, you get that shot first. Hope the vaccine works better than Windows. 🖕
Careful, @JosephStalin. With as flaky as Windows acts, a vaccine with problems could still perform better than the former.

I have officially caught the coronavirus AMA.
@Bugs_Galore, can you share where you might have caught it without powerleveling?

Best wishes for a speedy recovery. :heart-full:

Most likely from some guy on my floor who probably contracted it from some chick at a frat party. My apartment complex could probably be considered a biohazard exclusion zone at this point. Let's just say my college is essentially trying to speedrun the coronavirus pandemic. It's been about 3 weeks since the semester started and we already have over 2,000 cases. It was really just a matter of time before I got it. I'm disappointed but not surprised.

I've heard some really bizarre things lately from ultra-leftists when they are presented with the idea that a lockdown/more lockdowns means the closure of small businesses and a fucked economy (a fucked working class, too).

Things like: "No one has the right to own a business."

"No one is owed an income or career. The pandemic ruined the economy, not the shutdowns."

It's chilling.

How are you feeling?
Alright. I just mostly feel tired and sore. I feel a little lightheaded and find it somewhat difficult to maintain concentration when I'm trying to read. My eyes hurt when I move them and my body just kind of aches. Just sort of a dull ache throughout my entire body. That and I have a persistent dry cough.

All in all, it could be worse. It's certainly different from being sick with something like the flu. I'm not physically ill or vomiting and I don't have a stuffy nose or sore throat. Just the cough and the aching eyes and body.

They have no idea what a depression would mean for them and everyone else.

They get what they support, honestly. If they believe the best solution is absolutely destroying the economy and the lives of billions of people all so grandma and some hamplanets can live another year then they deserve to lose their freedom, their livelihoods (assuming they had any), and every single hip ethnic food truck and barcade or wherever the hell these people like to go to. They love konsooming korporate kock so much than they can konsoom even more korporate kock because big corporations will be the only game left in town. They can watch their parents' money dry up and move back to their evil oppressive wasteland ghoul town they thought they left for the paradise that is Portland or Austin or wherever. Maybe they'll look back and learn that "property can be replaced, lives cannot" is a really stupid belief.

It's just a pity everyone else has to live in the world these morons helped create and advocate for.

Its all disingenuous too.

See they never give you a threshold of how high the lethality rate has to be for them to justify it as a "deadly pandemic".
They never give you a threshold of what % of the population is actually at risk of muh long-term effects when trying to scaremonger.
They rarely, if ever, give you a number of "cases" that needs to be met before shit can reopen.
They never give you a threshold of how overloaded hospitals need to be to justify the lockdowns.

They have their talking point that COVID-19 is a deadly pandemic that can cause lasting damage and therefore we need to do XYZ indefinitely to stop, and no amount of peer-reviewed papers can change what the tenured virologists at Buzzfeed tell them.

Reminds me, does anyone have sources for actual published research showing the effectiveness/ineffectiveness of the various mask types? It's difficult to track down any study that includes the stupid cargo-cult bandanna face coverings and I'm getting really sick of the sheer aura of smug virtue signaling I've seen over them being MANDATORY AND IMPORTANT(tm).
Okay first off Here's the most used source that says that the masks ARE useful for the sake of being impartial (as impartial as a metastudy conducted by a company selling air purifiers on how good said purifiers are [and overextending a study about air pollution in China to how efficient mask filters are by glueing together all sizes of air pollution together and duct taping the results of masks specifically made to stop said pollution and making a biased conclusion while making a strawman to punch])

Also so we can establish the average virus size that everyone agrees on: 0.06 microns (60nm) to 0.14 microns (140 nm).

Now, at this point, I really don't want to trust any of the recent research about how MASKS TOTALLY WORK GUISE because again bias, and I get pissed when sources try to do media voodoo shit at me.

And my point in establishing the average size of said virus is because of how incredibly coincidental there is that there's a study detailing the efficacy of N95 Masks and surgical masks against viruses of similar size but way before the bat flu hysteria drove everyone's bias into Karen levels.

I don't really remember if this is the one that made me conclude the masks we have are shit, I'm too lazy to reread all of it, but I probably bookmarked it for a reason and I'm unlazy enough to read conclusions to know it pertains to the topic.
