I tracked down the paper for people who are interested. It is from BMJ so probably notable.
This paper is a big meta-analysis of high-quality, but presumably very heterogeneous cohort studies on obesity and mortality, covering more than 2.5 million people. Chief findings are 1) Among indices of obesity, The waist-to-thigh ratio and A body shape index have the strongest associations with mortality risk and 2) The inverse relationship between morality and thigh circumference and between morality and hip circumference seem to be new findings.
The findings apply to both men and women. But the authors specifically excluded studies which involved people who are already diseased.
