I'm gonna need some proof of that ever being the case, dude.
Basically, in the 80s, Otherkin were LARPers. If you were fortunate enough to be a tabletop or RPG nerd, having one of these guys was a goddamned godsend. They'd be able to invest themselves to a ridiculous degree. If you're D&D guy or played GURPs, one of these dudes was a fucking golden goose, able to help you come up with entire plot arcs or ideas, to say nothing of what they could do in open creative settings. If they believed that they were genuinely a dragon or some such shit, they padded this with the fact that this was solely a spiritual condition, and as such, they wrere generally all right.
In the 90s, Otherkin seepage into the Furry community happened. Curiously, Furries fucked this up no harder than anything else they've been associated with, and though there was a bit more sperging, it was generally considered light and not terribly troubling. You had a few cases of Otherkin nuttiness, but it wasn't a full-blown lulz-splosion until 1998 or so, when shit like Jenovah of the FFVII House and similar bits of absolute bat-shittery began to occur. By this point, Otherkin became synonymous with cult-like practices and flagrant, desperate bids for attention.
By 2005, we reached the point where Otherkin-mocking was a deserved activity, on-par with mocking racists. The practice eventually fell to Tumblr, where it caught on like wildfire with the Self-Diagnosing Tumblrina crowd who love to self-diag with Species Dysphoria. Bringing us full circle when we encounter ones tht make Jenovah of the FFVII House look fucking stable and decent when we now have the likes of WolfieBlackheart, who killed and decapitate their family dogs then do everything to try to prevent word from getting out after she initially bragged about it:

This was over IA's new video regarding Otherkin.
The mainstream press and ASPCA locked onto her ass, followed by PETA and then finally the IRS when it turned out she's running an illegal dog-breeding business. Really, not a lot to say. Otherkin nowadays are a far cry from what they once were.
