I think I don't understand why she couldn't update? I mean yes you need the Bluetooth to sync the fitbit with the app, but just do it now? Or does fitbit allows to sync at most a day worth of data?

A fitbit will continue to collect and hold data till its battery charge runs out - that will be around five to seven days depending on how heavily it is used.
So yeah you're right, if she had the steps recorded in her fitbit she could have just synced up her steps over the past week right there and then instead of typing out that lame ass excuse.
