UK British News Megathread - aka CWCissey's news thread

A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

I have a few thoughts on this

1. Giving the game away at the blurb. Wouldn't it be much nicer to have a reveal at some point instead, you could even do the cliched man being interviewed is the actual killer dun-dun-DUN.

2. Transvestites are not trans you bigots.

3. Not even original, Psycho, Buffalo Bill.

4. Without this book who would young fledgling serial killer transvestites look up to as a role model?

Can the outlet be held liable for spoiling the mystery? That seems like a pretty shitty thing of them to do.

Fuck knows depends where they got the info from. I thought they would have taken that info from the blurb or a press release but since it isn't out yet and they spoiled it it would depend on what they signed to get the review copy, if they are using another person as the source it's free real estate. There's even the chance it's outrage marketing.

Every time I’ve been out in the park there’s always been a few groups of 15 or so people having picnics, and I can’t think of a time when they weren’t entirely Muslim. Do they not understand the guidelines or do they just think the laws don’t apply to them?
They likely believe that the laws don't apply to them. And why shouldn't they believe that? Police care more about arresting people for thought crime then arresting rapists or murderers or destroyers of history.

Police told not to download the Kung Flu app.

Don't need to tell me!

A work colleague downloaded it and mentioned how it chewed through her battery with its constant bluetooth pinging.

But, yeah, like I'm ever going to willingly download a shitty version of Pokemon Go in which the grand prize is two weeks of daytime television.

The govt were talking about their offensive cyber attack powers and my only thought was if they had made programs to auto install all their internal software onto the target device rendering it a brick.

He's been doing 'Spectator TV' for the last few weeks, and while it's decent enough, his sound and video are shit. An investment of a couple of hundred quid would have done a lot. The contrast between his feed and his guests is pretty stark.

Yes we should totally defund the people who have to deal with oxygen thieves like these lot are, just because some Americans lapping as revolutionaries or blackshirts want to

This is the horrific moment eight police officers were doused in petrol as a crowd shouted "light them up" as they tried to arrest a dangerous driver.

The brave officers from Essex Police were working in Canvey Island in May 2019 when they received reports of a motorbike being driven dangerously in the area.

They ended up pursuing the driver for around eight miles, with the police helicopter also being drafted in the help with finding him.

When they caught up with him on an estate in Basildon, but when they went to arrest him a crowd of around 30 people gathered.

One woman threatened them with a hammer, before Justin Jackson, 28, rushed forward with a watering can full of petrol.

He then launched it over the officers, with two having to be taken to hospital after swallowing the toxic liquid and getting it in their eyes.

As Jackson launched his attack, the crowd shouted "light them up".

The shocking footage serves as a reminder of the danger the men and women in the police put themselves in everyday.

Chief Inspector Jonathan Baldwin told BBC's Critical Incident that the officers involved feared for their lives.

"One match, one lighter, one spark could result in us going up in flames and being disfigured for life or possibly even dead," he added.

PC Matthew Cutts tried to stop Jackson, fearing he could be about to seriously injure or even kill his colleagues.

He said: "I could smell petrol so I sort of fumbled around to get my baton out but once I've got it I've put it behind my head and just struck him in line with my training."

Jackson was jailed for three years and nine months following the incident.

A 17-year-old from Basildon was disqualified from driving for a year and fined.

So on a scale of light slap to nearly crippled how badly did the police beat this Jackson guy when they got him back to the station?
