Michael Moore was actually shouted down by Hollywood for criticizing the invasion of Iraq at the 2003 Academy Awards. It wasn't until after Saddam Hussein was captured at the end of 2003 and the Battle of Fallujah and the Abu Ghraib leaks in 2004 that the public opinion and media fully turned against the Iraq War.

It helps that Bush was an objectively bad president whose administration heralded the "eternal wars in the Middle East" and the surveillance state. His first year in office gave us 9/11 and the Dot Com bust while his last year gave us the Great Recession. Dubya's ties to the Religious Right and being an arch-neocon did him no favors and helped shape the nature of the "Current Year" culture war and the divide between coastal blue cities and the flyover states.
