Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

Here in LA indoor nail salons, and shopping malls are being allowed to re-open at 25% capacity.

So that's actually most of the full closures ended. I think the loan holdout closures are movie theaters, theme parks, gyms, dance and martial arts studios, and churches? Pools are hit and miss. I saw a martial arts class, and a yoga class out practicing in their respective parking lots.

We're also finally being allowed to visit Grandpa in his nursing home. Nobody's seen him since mid March, except Mom had to drive him to a doctor's appointment once in like August. Dad went into the local hospital for a thing about a month ago and chatted with the nurses who said there were two Covid patients in the entire hospital that day.

I mentioned in the Kiwis kissed by Corona thread that I've been exposed to the Cooties.
A few days ago I started feeling fatigued and now my blood pressure seems to be spiking at random.
I have not been tested and I really don't want to go have it done since there's not any treatment for it and going out would expose others to my germs.
This sucks. I was supposed to sit back and watch other people get sick, not catch it myself. Boo.
I think I had it back in February/March but it wasn't confirmed. If I did and if you do, just make sure you drink a LOT of water, rest, and stretch. For some dumb reason the stretching actually helped. Dunno why. Lymph movement maybe?

So I'm sure that a similar story has been posted before, but today I got to hear about some COVID-related fuckery.
A friend of mine works in the building and development business and they had to hire a bunch of Ukrainians (around 10) for an emergency job. Because of Covid, those Ukrainians had to get their samples taken and tested for the kungflu.
My friend, not wanting to risk having some/all of them being found to have the virus, decided to just give 10 of their own samples, as in, 10 identical samples coming from my friend.
On Friday they got the results. The lady from the testing center called them and said "well it's not so bad, only three of the samples show positive, so the rest can come and work"
And people wonder why there's a lot of skepticism about this shit.

So idk if I'm late, but yesterday we got results from some test in July indicating about 130,000 people in Ohio had covid antibodies. DeWine saw this and thought, "how can I be a huge cunt?"

Gov. Mike DeWine says Ohioans will wear masks for awhile, after new study finds just 1.5% of state had coronavirus antibodies in July

By Laura Hancock, cleveland.com

COLUMBUS, Ohio – A study of Ohio adults found that 1.5% had antibodies to COVID-19 in July, when the state conducted a large study to try to estimate the prevalence of the illness.

Statewide, that corresponds to about 133,000 Ohio adults.

Antibodies are proteins developed in people who were previously infected with the coronavirus. Researchers also found that 0.9% of people had active coronavirus illnesses at that time. That corresponds statewide 80,000 people.

The conclusion of the study made by Gov. Mike DeWine is that so few Ohioans are immune that the state’s residents will have to continue to wear masks, physically space themselves apart and exercise other measures to prevent spread of COVID-19. These measures could continue for awhile, until a vaccine is widely available, he said.

The study

Ohio State University and the Ohio Department of Health conducted the study July 9-18, with 727 adults participating, after reaching out to 1,200 households. The households were located across U.S. Census Bureau tracts that are geographically representative of the state, said Abby Norris-Turner, an OSU infectious disease epidemiologist involved in the research.

People were given a blood serological test for antibodies and a nasal swab to look for active infection.

After the laboratory results came back, researchers used Bayesian statistics across the Census tracts “to come up with these estimates that would be a statewide estimate of prevalence,” Norris-Turner said.

The confidence interval for the 1.5% of people with antibodies ranges from 0.3% to 2.9%.

The confidence interval for the active cases ranges from 0.1% to 2%.

Three month antibody detection

Antibodies for COVID-19 can be detected for about three months, so that some of the people were infected as far back as mid-April.

Norris-Turner said that people infected earlier may have some form of coronavirus resistance, but the science isn’t yet definitive.

She said the antibody test results are consistent with American Red Cross antibody tests that are given to people who want to donate blood. They are also similar to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study that included Ohio.

Because antibody tests can’t go back more than three months, there is no way to get a complete picture of how many Ohioans have had COVID-19.

“What we can say more generally and with confidence is the prevalence of COVID-19 of adults in Ohio – this study only studied adults – is relatively low, has remained relatively low,” she said. “The flip side of that coin, of course, is that that means many more people are still susceptible for infection.”

Compared to other states

Ohio, in comparison to regional neighbors, is fairly low in the prevalence of people with antibodies, Norris-Turner said. West Virginia and Wisconsin are lower than Ohio. Indiana is similar to Ohio.

But Ohio is much lower than Pennsylvania and New York.

Expect to wear your mask for years

DeWine later commented on the study, concluded that it shows Ohio isn’t anywhere close to herd immunity, which will occur when most of the population is immune to COVID-19.

That means Ohioans will have to wear masks, socially distance and exercise other preventative measures for quite a while.

“As you heard from the discussion that (Lt. Gov.) Jon Husted had and the study he presented today, we’re not going to get that without the vaccine,” DeWine said. “We’re not going to work our way into this for years. So what we have to do is hang in there, keep this virus low. We’ll keep our foot on its neck and wait. And we wait for the vaccine to hit and when it gets here and the first people start getting the shots, we’ve got to encourage everybody to get one that can."

As with coronavirus testing in the beginning of the pandemic, vaccines will be scarce in the beginning and only given to the most vulnerable people -- such as nursing home residents and first responders.

“It’s going to take a while to get this out," DeWine said. “...(When) we’ve got a significant segment of the population, and I don’t know what that segment is, but a significant segment that have that immunity -- if this does in fact work the way we hope it will --that’s when we see the end of this.”

I know stats and all that, but 727 adults in a state of almost 12 Million seems a bit low, but this is from the Ohio State University. Probably trying to justify shutting their football program down while the SEC once again deservedly waves their dicks in OSU's face.

I do love his weasel words though, DeWine is allergic to ever giving a firm answer on anything.

I keep seeing this same dumb comment about how terrible the US’ response to Covid was but no one ever bothers to actually explain how

They've all been drip-fed from preschool that America = bad, so the second there's anything negative said about the country they just nod in agreement and never question why such statements are proclaimed. It's but a symptom of a decades-in-the-making plan to rot the US from the inside out by getting its own population to hate everything America stands for.

My family is still afraid of the virus sadly, and our governor has extended the order to November. Has anyone elses family still been buying into the fear mongering? I think it's unfortunate that people are still acting like this virus will kill the whole country.
Funny you should ask. My brother and his wife came down for a visit this weekend, and several times they were complaining about how "nobody's taking this seriously" and shit like that with regards to the mask mandates and such. Her parents especially were singled out for generally ignoring precautions, but as far as I'm aware, neither of them have gotten the coof. Meanwhile, my brother mentioned they've basically not gone anywhere besides the grocery store since March, except for like once or twice. We were initially going to go out to eat with my parents, but she didn't like the idea of being in a restaurant around the infected, so we got carryout instead and ate at home. We pretty much just visited at the parentals' home all weekend and didn't really do shit. They really seem to think that a., the coof is actually very deadly, and b., the various mandates will somehow stop the coof entirely.

My brother is not an idiot, but he sure seems to have lost a few IQ points after marrying her. She's not dumb, but she's very stubborn, so if she gets an idea in her head, she won't back down about it at all. He pretty much ends up going along with whatever. I feel for him.

My parents, meanwhile, put up with whatever the mandates are, but they go out occasionally to places beyond just going to the store. I've talked with my mom and she agrees it's pretty stupid that they keep forcing all these regulations for a disease that barely kills anyone, especially shutting down schools and forcing remote learning if there are a few cases, despite studies showing kids aren't really affected by the coof and don't spread it much at all. My parents are in the age group that has an increased risk of complications, but they're both healthy enough, not overweight, take their vitamins, etc. I imagine if either of them got the Wu Flu, they might have some trouble, but I doubt it would be severe.

As for me, in the past few months I've perused various bookstores, headed out to eat, and seen multiple movies: no coof here. My mom and I went to visit a couple ladies from our church that we haven't seen in quite a while since we're still not doing in-person worship, and they didn't bother with masks, nor did they ask us to wear them. Considering one of them is on a chemo regimen, really says a lot about how some people feel about this. I've followed mask requirements as needed, but I always take mine off as soon as I'm outside again. I'm not gonna wear the useless totem any longer than I have to, nor am I going to live in fear of a virus that has a far less than 1% chance of killing me. There's a new museum that opened up recently that I'm planning on visiting, and a classic car show this week that I might attend as well. Why let the Wu Flu stop me?

It's absolutely fucking ridiculous that people are still living in fear of the coof. As I've said before, I could understand having trepidation back in March, but it's fucking October now. Get the fuck over yourself and go enjoy life again.

Kinda hard to when the government, megacorps and media are all working in tandem to keep the "new normal" bullshit shoved in everyone's faces 24/7. The masks in particular help tremendously with this, no better way to make sure the stupid virus is constantly burned into everyone's minds than to force propaganda muzzles onto every living soul just so they can step out of their fucking front doors. It's the perfect "fear stabilizer" to ensure there's always a constant visual stimuli even when folks manage to tear themselves away from screens and the news long enough.

We all know the scam going on but most people are sheep and just go with what Big Brother tells them, which is why the insanity is still ongoing thanks to the overriding majority continuing to be fearful and compliant (and be vitriolic towards anyone who dares to think otherwise).

Michigan, USA -- In light of the recent Michigan Supreme Court Opinion ruling against Governor Whitmer's power to extend emergency declarations, state Attorney General Dana Nessel has announced she will stop enforcing such orders with prosecutions. However, she suggested that other state law enforcement agencies or departments with independent enforcement authority may still choose to do so.

because it wasn't, USA is actually doing better than Canada, Germany and on par with Norway and Japan

Percentage of coronavirus cases which lead to deaths

if Obama or any other Dem was a president, media would use covid per capita numbers to spin it as a great success, but since Trump is responsible, they use total numbers (omiting the fact that countries they compare US to are several times smaller by population) to spin it as terrible

I mean this is about as simple as statistics get. Nobody should be falling for this shit and yet they do. Confirmation bias is a hell of a drug.

Some believe it, some just go along because they don't have the fight.

My wife is somewhat the former, despite otherwise being a very intelligent woman. I've had to explain to her that washing groceries is a waste of soap, and she's convinced that, if she flies out to see her parents, they'll die the moment she enters the same room as them. Not that I'd want to fly right now, anyway. The airlines are all mandating masks, and the business class lounges are either shut, or they're devoid of any of the reason for using them.

My dad is the latter. He's long held the view that it's not worth fighting, and he'd prefer to just get on with his life as best as possible, and enjoy what he can while he still has the ability. I don't blame him. He's nearly 80 (healthy as a horse, mind you) and just wants to wait it out at this point.

That said, he's bringing his van and his arm candy down to see us soon, so he's not completely knuckling under.

Article: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/ar...e-16-000-Covid-cases-missed-Excel-glitch.html

A furious blame game is under way today after 16,000 coronavirus cases were missed due to a computer glitch - meaning thousands more potentially infected contacts were not traced.

The extraordinary meltdown is believed to have been caused by an Excel spreadsheet containing lab results reaching its maxium size, and failing to update.

Some 15,841 cases between September 25 and October 2 were not uploaded to the government dashboard.

As well as underestimating the scale of the outbreak in the UK, critically the details were not passed to contact tracers, meaning people exposed to the virus were not tracked down.

Work and Pensions Secretary Therese Coffey conceded this morning that more Britons 'may well' have been infected due to the blunder.

But Boris Johnson scrambled to play down concerns that ministers have been making pivotal decisions on lockdown without accurate information, saying the outbreak was still in line with where its experts thought.

The shambolic situation sparked an immediate backlash against PHE - which is already set to be abolished and replaced by the government - with claims 'everything it touches turns to sh**'.

But the body hit back by pointing the finger at the Test & Trace operation, run by Baroness Dido Harding. 'We report the data when they send it. We didn't get it,' one official told Sky News.

The technical issue has now been resolved by splitting the Excel files into batches.

PHE officials said the outstanding cases were transferred to NHS Test and Trace 'immediately' after the issue was resolved and thanked contact tracers for their 'additional efforts' over the weekend to clear the backlog.

All cases were passed on to tracers by 1am on Saturday, meaning potential delays of more than a week in contacting thousands of people who were exposed to the virus and telling them to self-isolate.

PHE said every single person who was tested initially had received their test result as normal, with all those testing positive told to self-isolate.

The technical issue meant daily totals reported on the Government's coronavirus dashboard over the last week have been lower than the true number.

For example, 4,786 cases which were due to be reported on October 2 were not included in the daily total on the dashboard that day, when the figure was given as 6,968.

The Government's dashboard said that, as of 9am on Sunday, there had been a further 22,961 lab-confirmed cases of coronavirus in the UK, taking the total number of cases in the UK to 502,978.

A note on the dashboard said: 'The cases by publish date for 3 and 4 October include 15,841 additional cases with specimen dates between 25 September and 2 October – they are therefore artificially high for England and the UK.'

Michael Brodie, interim chief executive at PHE, said the 'technical issue' was identified overnight on Friday October 2 in the data load process that transfers Covid-19 positive lab results into reporting dashboards.

The problem was caused by an Excel spreadsheet reaching its maximum file size, which stopped new names being added in an automated process.

The files have now been split into smaller multiple files to prevent the issue happening again.

Test and Trace and Public Health England joint medical adviser Susan Hopkins said: 'All outstanding cases were immediately transferred to the contact tracing system by 1am on 3 October and a thorough public health risk assessment was undertaken to ensure outstanding cases were prioritised for contact tracing effectively.'

PHE said NHS Test and Trace have made sure that there are more than enough contact tracers working, and are working with local health protection teams to ensure they also have sufficient resources to be urgently able to contact all cases.

The number of call attempts is being increased from 10 to 15 over 96 hours.

However, in a round of interviews this morning, Ms Coffey admitted that people are likely to have been infected as a consequence of the failures.

Asked if some could have become infected because of the error, she told Sky News: 'There may well be, and I've been made aware that probably the majority of that (contact tracing) has happened in the latest element of the week, in the last couple of days.

'So it's important that we act quickly, and PHE (Public Health England) is acting quickly, to see whether or not people are required to self-isolate.

'Because I do recognise that not quite everybody going through the regime will be identified by the Test and Trace regime to undertake that further self-isolation.'

On a visit to an energy firm in London today, Boris Johnson - who refused to give a full explanation in an interview yesterday - said 'some of the data got truncated and it was lost'.

'But what they have done now is not only contacted all the people who were identified as having the disease – that was done in the first place – but they are now working through all the contacts as well,' he said.

'The key thing, I would say, and it goes for everybody, is that if you are contacted by NHS Test and Trace then you must self-isolate, if you are told you have been in contact with somebody who has the virus.

Excel spreadsheets have a maximum file size? It seems this pandemic is teaching us more about ourselves and the world around us than previously thought!

As stated in the article, this is the cause behind the massive spike in numbers as they're playing catch-up by tacking on the backlog of unreported cases onto the daily statistics.

Lol so basically this is the result of ongoing efforts to break up the NHS.

The David Cameron regime created 'Public Health England' some years ago as a separate agency to take over NHS responsibilities, with the intention that it would cause chaos and help enable privitization as 'it couldn't be worse'. Then this dodgy 'test and trace' operation was created this year with plenty of 'private-public partnerships' included.

As one can see, this has successfully created a problem, because instead of the NHS having a single database that would be used for epidemiological reporting and contact tracing, there are a bunch of Excel files floating around, in some dodgy workflow created by some Hindoo IT contractors without any oversight by health experts or business analysts.

From the point of view of preventing old people from dying, this is a failure. From the point of view of the Conservative party, and the neoliberal ascendancy of the Labour party, this is a stunning success.
