Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

I guess they're going to ignore the fact that Cuomo, DeWine, and Whitmer's orders killed thousands in retirement homes.
It was two things with Nursing Homes in the UK. Patients declined and died from non copd things through the isolation and enforced no contact with friends and family, and Gov targets on deaths in a hospital setting- as in these are bad, avoid at all costs- mwant hospitals discharged patients with it into a care home setting where they infected vulnerable (ie, old) patients who then died of it. Because older people make up one of the two largest at risk groups.

Lots of are homes though are reporting residents basically wasting away and giving up because they see nobody, no friends or family from outside. This robs them of the will to live and they give up and die. How this an be called humane is beyond me. Were I older I would carry on as normal and end myself with pills and booze if I got the coof badly.

All the people peddling conspiracy theories that this is some machiavellian plot to break up the NHS are forgetting two fundamentally important things:
1)Most government related projects are run by fucking retards
2)The government is cheap as fuck

They're using excel because they already have the licenses for it, it's cheaper than creating bespoke software and the people in charge are too dumb to realise why it's such a bad idea.

To give you an idea of how common shit like this is, I know someone who used to work for DWP. Apparently a big chunk of the system designed to stop people with a history of kicking off from getting appointments in person in the job centre in future is run using a huge collection of Excel spreadsheets. Moreover they were shared access documents which meant half the time shit couldn't be saved because some tard left it open and then fuckedd off for the day, or some boomer accidentally did Save As and they ended up with a bunch of copies and some poor sod had to try and merge them even while more people were trying to add shit (and apparently if people couldn't save to the main document they'd still be making copies even as someone was trying to fix it)

I lost all the Covid cases after the 65535th because I'm still on Excel 2003. (The first row is headers)
I thought I was joking, but this turns out to have literally been true. They were using ancient 64K-row spreadsheets.

The problem is that PHE's own developers picked an old file format to do this - known as XLS.

As a consequence, each template could handle only about 65,000 rows of data rather than the one million-plus rows that Excel is actually capable of.

:sighduck:

There was also the occasion back in 2007(?) or so when some low-level, likely incredibly poorly-trained admin assistant over at Child Benefit put the entire CB database, burned onto two CDs, in the normal courier postbags. They never arrived at the destination office. Courier had ... lost them. Or someone stole them.

It was a Very Big Deal, absolute panic ensued due to the obvious data protection issues and usefulness of this data to identity thieves, and the Men in Black appeared at the doors of managers of certain DWP post sorting offices at 3am to drag them out of bed and make them unlock the offices and search them top to bottom. Entire huge sites were put on stop and search activity. No dice. No discs, more to the point. It went on and on.

The CDs were never found, and probably never will be. Nobody knows what happened to them. All due to the fact that in 2007 the DWP systems did not allow file transfer this size, hence the need to burn to disc and physically transfer the files by post.

This stuff is actually legion across all govt-run agencies. NHS is actually worse than the DWP when it comes down to inadequacy, outdatednes and incompatibility of IT systems. The issue is essentially that the people who have final say on what gets bought and used have no idea what they're doing, and their only motivation is getting their bonuses for saving money. This is why govt will spend tens of millions on an IT system that will fail the first day. They listen to nobody in they development process except the fuckwitted type at the top who assures them his decision will save them x-million.

Couple of Reason articles.

Perhaps, but in the USA there's a countermeasure for every measure. Would also guess people who would stop/roll back all this ChiCom Flu bullshit may have a good chance of being elected.

Michigan, USA

Masks, etc. will still be required in Michigan, as Dr. Robert Gordon, head of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, has issued his own orders, which largely mirror Governor Whitmer's recently-invalidated ones, and expects to issue more in the coming days.

So their response to being told they can't just issue edicts like dictators is to...continue to issue edicts like dictators? How the fuck is that allowed?

Because the head of the MDHHS can issue measures during an epidemic under his own authority, which does not apparently require a state of emergency to be declared by the governor.
"If the director determines that control of an epidemic is necessary to protect the public health, the director by emergency order may prohibit the gathering of people for any purpose and may establish procedures to be followed during the epidemic to insure continuation of essential public health services and enforcement of health laws. Emergency procedures shall not be limited to this code."
But get this: his powers are narrower than the governor's. For example, he can't, (I'm pretty sure), unilaterally extend unemployment benefits like Governor Whitmer did, by an order that has now been invalidated. There is a lot of stuff she did unilaterally that is about to all go up in smoke unless she and the legislature come to an agreement fast.
There's more details and more articles in the A&N thread.

This is the most schizophrenic societal response ever.

On one hand, you have tens of millions of people going to bars, clubs, and parties, church, gym, cookouts, hobbyist gatherings, restaurants, and so on. I mostly include activities that no one is wearing "masks" for here, to distinguish the two sides. In this group are the people whose workplaces don't make them play dress up, as well.

On the other hand, you have tens of millions of people "isolating", using only delivery services, working from home (many of us don't have the option, not that it's very tempting to me), and wearing "masks" while burning up the sanitizer everywhere they go. Frequently these people also work in some front end or corporate job which makes them wear "face coverings" (perhaps it improves aesthetics in the office).

I was wrong to be so optimistic at the beginning of summer. I'm still generally optimistic, and I've been doing my part by casually disregarding "mandates" everywhere I go (if you comply freely it's like pleading guilty - you've already surrendered), but this whole thing has taken on a cultural life of it's own. Like any polarizing issue, it now has it's own spectrum of belief systems. You have the fringes, which range from outdoor "mask" wearers who lecture others, to conspiracy minded weirdos who try to fight employees that tell them to wear a fag rag. In between you have a bunch of very confused people, kind-hearted pussies going along to get along, and cynical consumers inconsistently applying vague rules.

In the beginning I said that our overall response to this virus evidenced what I referred to as a "weakened social immune system", our lack of cohesion and connection in a post-modern wasteland manifesting itself as social chaos. I stand by this assessment, and it's worse than I initially thought. On the plus side, I really have been living my life normally, including going out partying on weekend nights (even if the bars close early). I've almost never had to involuntarily don a voodoo droplet protector in the course of my normal routine, and when I've been asked to outside of specific business (which has also been infrequently) I've just gone to the next similar retail store instead.

Still, it's gotten to be more and more frustrating as I wonder what the hell people are thinking. Huge crowds go out and breathe directly on each other Friday night, then Saturday they're expected to play pretend when they enter a Wal-Mart in the same town. An hour of driving takes you to an "open" state, no ass (face) coverings necessary, yet a bare 35 miles away there's curfews and mandates. The same atomization that's caused this disordered response is also preventing an organized pushback against idiot liability managers (aka elected officials) and their useful idiots/idiocy.

FUCK NEWSOM. FUCK HIM. FUCK HIM.

Short while ago a young girl came to the door, offering tamales her mother was making/had made/whatever. I don't eat tamales. Asked the girl why her mother was selling tamales. Mother had lost job due to the ChiCom Flu. Gave her some money, wished her the best.

Have this very bad feeling we're going to see much more of this as we head into the holidays. Expect large, continual food/toy drives for Christmas. Now I can see more unfortunates coming around.

After two weeks this was all political. I don't believe Newsom gives flying fuck one about anyone but himself and his main campaign contributors. They don't worry about such mundane things as feeding their families.

My namesake did some horrible things, but have never read of him deliberately keeping people from earning a living. Hitler did all sorts of horrible things, but have never read of him deliberately keeping people from earning a living. The only ones who keep their people from earning a living are certain "governors"/"elected leaders" in such "liberal democracies" such as the US/UK/Aus/NZ, far as I know..

The siren song of power is very seductive. See what happens to those under its' thrall. But what goes around comes around.

Beyond disgusted this evening. Just no logical reason for so many to suffer. Just fucking power trips. Rant over.

I cannot believe the frequency of this thread some days. Looks like people are panic buying again where I am at, we are doing all of my college stuff online. We will know sometime within the next couple of weeks whether or not classes will resume as normal in January. Employment is still hard af, a bunch of established businesses has closed their doors where I live, and the overdoses outdo the pandemic 4 fold. Starting to see a lot more tweakers migrate into the city than normal, insane times. CERB is now done, I guess they introduced two new alternatives, which who knows what they are planning at this point. The service industry is essentially dead and they are putting limits on meat, especially on turkeys this year. I guess after they run out of stock, they aren't replenishing the supply. and especially for the prime rib. I still see the mask autism, any of the posters at the beginning of the thread where this was the state of the thread:

Who knew that all it would take would be one bat to destroy an entire global economy.

I'm no expert on law at all, but when this is all over, will this shit open up the state and local governments being sued up the ass with class action lawsuits from people who were negatively impacted by this?

First Reason article describes something I have been trying to grasp...why I despise the phrase “the new normal.” It announces the desire and intent for this to not go away, ever. We should all be working toward restoring normalcy. Guess what, NOBODY WANTS TO ACCEPT THIS FOREVER and that’s the intent you are displaying. Terrible optics. You are telling people to have no hope. You should avoid that. The left would have much better traction here if they’d at least pretend a return to normal is the goal...but lol, they’re owned by various forces like blacks and troons and commies who would never stop screeching about how the old normal was actually terrible!!! and a desire to return to it is Whiteness, so I guess they can’t do that.
