It's partly that, in that the left does rely heavily on magical thinking. But it's also a signal to other leftists that the individual is not encouraging lockstep voting with the DNC, a signal they send indicating the individual needs to be silenced. A form of call, a whistle perhaps, one specifically coded so that only certain people, analogous perhaps to loyal dogs, can hear. A... hm, there's a term for it, but it's escaping me. But it's a good thing that they don't project their constant use of it onto other people or I'd probably remember it.

IIRC Rich Eisen got him on meds and convinced ESPN to rehire him doing radio play by play for baseball after Olberman went "eat shit out of the toilet" insane on Esquire Magazine's dime. With it widely rumored that Olberman's contract had an explicit "stick to sports" clause in it to fire him if he resumed eating feces from the toilet.
That said, this time around, Olberman left ESPN on good terms (he's been fired countless times and had to have his friends beg ESPN to rehire him each time). Apparently Olberman found another sugar daddy to finance a new Youtube show and ESPN basically let him leave because he asked politely this time to step away. One wonders who his new backer is but it also raises he issues that should be noted, that Olberman's too fucking crazy for even MSNBC to hire or even CNN to hire these last four years (though in MSNBC's case, it's rumored Rachel Maddow has threatened to quit if Keith rejoined the network due to them having a big fall-out when he was fired and Rachel keeping talentless eunuch Chris Hayes on the air to prevent MSNBC from giving the slot to someone who could upstage her in the ratings).
