Creeps can be good at hiding crap, apparently not that good in this case. But Ryan built up the rep that he was a family man, he could play off texting during the day as texting his wife, daycare or babysitter. He played off taking an extra day as needing to unwind and sleep. Since these were fans of his, they would probably know he had a day job so probably didn't text as much. So while they may have saw some signs, they really add them all up, because it was Ryan the family guy and he wouldn't.

But he did, and now in hindsight they are probably adding up all those little things they passed off as nothing and realizing that they probably should have caught on.
