Kiwi Station 13 development board

everyone will complain that the server will either be taken down
Unless it's one of those bootleg "anime" BYOND servers that uses a copyrighted IP and somehow the license holder finds out about it, there's no way a Kiwi Station is getting taken down just based on the merit of it existing.

or lead to kiwis getting doxed
This is a legitimate, realistic possibility. There have been several cases of "accidental" (or intentional) BYOND login credentials and client IP address leaks from servers in the past. Neither one of these things is inherently damaging in and of itself (outside of losing access to your BYOND account or having your modem/router DOS'd for a bit), but we should all know by now how weaponized autism can eventually turn a single crumb of information on a person into a full on doxxing before long. But I'd consider that more of a "worst case scenario" happenstance than something with a high likelihood of happening in this case.

the server will be empty a majority of the day
Deadshifts aren't so bad. It gives some people an opportunity to learn and experiment without risking ruining the round for everyone. It's how I learned a few aspects of basic bitch chemistry, cooking, engineering maintenance and construction, and, at one point, how to properly set up the singularity generator back when that was standard on /tg/. Can't figure out the SM generator for the life of me, though, but I can wire a mean solar array.

but most of all theres just gonna be a bunch of vandalism everywhere on the server.
Basically, greytiding. That's why I've repeatedly cautioned about taking preventative measures against tiding ITT.

If this actually happens, please force anyone who logs on to type 'nigger' to actually join a round and change the "Joining" message to "Posting tweet.."

I have a feeling these tiny changes would filter out a whole lot of the undesirables, since the sort I've seen ruin other servers are the type who are absolutely horrified by words even devoid of context.

I'm pretty sure there's never been a forced "Say" command requirement to join a round in progress and that sort of thing isn't supported in the fundamental code for the game.

You CAN, however, reprogram telecomms during the round so that the automated station announcement system says whatever the fuck you want it to. But that's pretty metagame, unless you've been selected for an antagonist role that round and you want to achieve FUN.

Hearing stuff like that makes me concerned that, with rules against meta, validhunting, and tiding enforced, you might have plenty of dumb tiders from here who join and then promptly SSD or suicide every round whenever the game doesn't just roll them as an antagonist.

Yeah, it's been forever since I played, I don't remember how the BYOND login process goes. I wasn't meaning anything inside the actual round or visible to others (which would be stupid) just some sort of simple filter to discourage the sort of randoms who seem to appear on public servers with the sole purpose of getting really offended at benign things in chat that they find offensive.

Regarding the suiciders and such, that's pretty much a given on any game server being added to an established community. All but the most autistic get bored and fuck off within a day or so though when the novelty wears off.

SS13 is a game I've always found myself interested in but I never made the jump into playing. Partially due to the endless stories about degeneracy, power tripping, and metagaming that go around.

Would be interested in a KF server though even if it did eventually spiral. Nothin' lasts forever.

I'd join.

Don't know what I'm doing controls-wise, though I DID once assist the mechanics guy in putting a dead person's brain in a robot body.

It was a traitor and things ended up going wrong.

A kiwi13 server is probably the only way I'd give the game a try, so I'll vote yes.

TBH I'm fine with gamer words being banned, because 99% of people arn't capable of using them in an amusing fashion. Having them not banned only attracts stormfags.

How about everyone gets a set amount of n word passes at the start of each round while antagonists get unlimited n word usage

Better yet, coordinate Medical and Science to conduct mandatory voice activated bomb implants that are triggered upon saying the word "nigger" on every single crew member save for Head roles. Make the bombs low yield enough so that they only cause gibbing and minor structural damage on detonation so that it won't be a huge detriment for Engineering to make repairs. Make the CMO announce that it's part of the process of "Penis Inspection Day", which the crew is usually receptive to participate in, because memes.

Best case scenario: Everyone learns to avoid spamming the word if they don't want to die instantly.
Likely scenario: People detonate themselves on purpose anyway or a few people figure out ghetto surgery and conduct bomb removals in maintenance.
Worst case scenario: Some memers make maxcaps for surgical implantation. Chaos ensues.

Either way, it sounds like a pretty fun round gimmick.

Apologies for doubleposting, but because this thread has died down a bit and I have some concerns as to whether or not anyone on the farms is still interested in pursuing making a dedicated community server, I'm going to link some resources that would help someone get started with hosting a server first and foremost.

This guide from reddit is an excellent baseline for getting started on hosting a server. For budgetary reasons, I would highly recommend considering hosting the server on a VPS, following the hardware requirement guidelines detailed within the guide. Whoever decides to do so, I'd suggest paying out of pocket for the cost for at least a month, maybe two months if the interest and player activity remains decent and constant. After that, if interest continues, it might be prudent to look into creating a PayPal or some other form of donation-based service for the community to pay into to help cover server costs. Upgrades and benefits from doing so can be decided upon at a later time when it becomes relevant. For now, just providing somewhere for the farmers to play on will be well and fine enough.

Also note that the KiwiFarms community server does not need to be listed in the BYOND server listings in order for people to be able to play it. As long as someone posts the IP address for the server here, everyone can connect directly to it through BYOND. This way, you can keep the server's participation limited to farmers instead of having randoms pop in and potentially shit things up.

Now, because I recall seeing Beestation mentioned as server code people would like to see used on the server, here is the github for Beestation's regular SS13 server. Follow the steps from the reddit guide linked earlier, but use this git as the source for whatever's necessary.

Hope this provides some help on where to start with getting the ball rolling on this idea.

I am currently trying to learn how to code in Byond, I am reading the 2000 guide written by the man who developed Byond. the truth is that i am completely tech illiterate and am trying to learn the abc's before pouring in the cash I am saving up for this project. I am hoping to have some more tech savvy users review my work and correct my course from time to time, I am probably going see if I can pay Null (Admittedly I would only be able to offer a few hundred in a purely symbolic transaction as $300-$500 is nothing in terms of pay for a professional for how long I imagine it would take) to take a quick look at the code in order to grant the server some legitimacy.

I only have two older laptops that can barely play skyrim at the moment, I would like to know what hardware I would realistically need to undertake this endeavor. I plan on following through with this, if I do not have enough money now I will force myself to finally switch professions to construction. I started this thread, it is my responsibility to get this off the ground and to hand it over to someone who can code it and run it better (someone who will follow the spirit of this project, a 𝗞𝗜𝗪𝗜 server that will not change with the Metanarrative of popular acceptabilitylity.) so that it could realistically thrive and grow.

I will not ask of money until the server is actually running. there is no point in giving me money if i fail at the first hurtle. your help is greatly appreciated Gravemind and others. I am not sure if I should make this server public as I am worried about getting doxed and no longer being able to achieve my dream of making wooden triangles for a living. On the other hand I want everyone to have access to my work as I would feel compunction for denying people the ability to truely enjoy what i build.

My first goal is to develop a working concept, I personally want to use bee as a base, as it is the only server o have played. the first hurdle is that i have a basic understanding of three roles; cook, botanist, and shaft miner. I am in no way great at these roles either. I can only perform basic task in each. I need somebody who knows this game and its roles to tell me what they think would help each role and what roles really matter and are fun. if I can multiple people with experience to help me in that regard that would be great. Having a different set of departments then what ever server we base it on is my pie in the sky dream.

I need a team, this is too much for one cave man. I want this to be the communitie server not the Millhouse server. please message me with your idea's and proposals. not to hamper your hopes though, I am not confident in my ability to implement them as I realistically have no clue what I am doing right now. I will not be able to pay much if anything right now, I don't want to trick people into thinking I can pay for professional work and fuck them over.

This may be a 2022 release, If I am able to pick up on this quickly and can get a strong team moving. I am scared but excited for what will come.

please wish me luck. -Millhouse Nancy Metz

Much as I have admiration for your plans going into this, it does feel a bit like you're putting the cart before the horse on this one.

Most of your stated intent here sounds like long term goals that are certainly worth pursuing, but I think the most important thing, first and foremost, would be to at least get a basic bitch server running. Let it run directly off Beecode for the time being. If enough people play on it, and keep coming back to play on it, for the server to maintain a healthy playerbase within, say, 2 months, then you can start worrying about tweaking things in the code to make the server a truly unique place. It'll be a process, much like anything else. Hell, you could probably testbed whatever changes you want to make on the server locally hosting and troubleshooting another instance of the server code on one of your two laptops (if not both). BYOND runs on a fucking toaster and has been very low maintenance for years.

You also don't have to have high spec hardware or LOADSAMONEY to run a server, either. Like the reddit guide suggests, just pick a VPS service to host the server on. Most of the rates that offer the specs needed to run a server usually run for about $5-12 a month, which is why I suggested just paying out of your own pocket for the costs for about a month, maybe two, and see what the state of the playerbase is like after that. If it stays lively and has plenty of active players, then you can start getting people to pitch in donations to help cover the costs, and maybe start looking into upgrades.

You also don't necessarily need knowledge over every role in the game in order to run a server. It's better to learn it as you go along. I'm betting a lot of people around here are going to be in the same boat when they're playing.

Simple way to go about this since you need a team, as all servers do:
Be the server host. Be the guy who has bought the VPS subscription and is running the server on it. Provide the IP address for the server here on the Farms so people can play it.
Announce administration team applications. Announce coder team applications. Most servers have two separate bodies of people like this – One that manages the "people" and "community" side of the server, and one that handles all the coding and technical backbone for the server. You will probably manage to start getting some talented people out of the woodwork to come and help once you actually provide a server for them to start playing on.

Hell, it only took about a week or so for 8chan's Hatestation to be discussed, planned out, and then launched and hosted. You can wing it as you go. Just gotta watch out for powertripping autists and manipulative community shitters who constantly cause drama. It's a process that you and your team are not gonna get right 100% of the time, and that's fine, even if people get really loud and really obnoxious about it. Because that's the kind of autism SS13 tends to attract.

Slight necrobumping this thread (and subsequently doubleposting out of necessity) to share with everyone something interesting I just managed to dig up while looking into an unrelated matter:

There appears to already be a github for a tgcode-based Kiwifarms SS13 server (at least if the URL is to be believed):
https://git.kiwifarms.net/Null/tgstation

Does anyone have any further information regarding this git? I'm quite curious to know if there is already a KF SS13 server up and running someplace.

By rule set, I really meant code base and what it is derived from, station power source, common maps and game modes etc. I wasn't clear on my part, though speaking of:

Lawyering rules/silicon laws provided in game is not encouraged.
Don’t attack/damage the arrivals shuttle, and do not attack anyone until they have left the area at least once.
Racial and homophobic slurs are not permitted.
Lol what? Arguing over Silicone laws is the literal point of silicone laws, as put forth by Asimov. I question these rules. At least speaking Mimes are valid.
