Throwing my two cents into the ring here for why trains attract the 'tism: it's also about consistency. Trains are the absolute definition of a rigid schedule. You don't reroute a train because of weather (for the most part anyways), you don't randomly stop a train because one person has to pee, it is going where it says it's going to and then it will come back. And it will do so in a timely fashion.
My late father in law was big into trains because of the history of them and because he worked on one of the lines every summer during high school and college. He once told us a story about someone who he worked with for a few months one summer who had memorized every schedule for every line, and had a crying fit when they were twelve minutes late. He never saw that guy working on the train itself again, but would see him around the railyard and the station, so his best guess was the guy was fired for having a freakout over running late and was still hanging around or he got moved to the front office.

So I came up with a new theory that should cement Shaner firmly as a cow and I got the idea from the mention of Sonic. So let me present to you:

So I'm back for another round of train drama from yesteryear. These threads are from 2007 when Leonard Shaner was pulling the same multi account sock puppet stuff he now does on Facebook on Railfan.net.
No one is buying the Shaner (tube)sockpuppets. (2007) Even back then people were pretty tired of his crap.

It's from a discussion about if he should be kicked off Railfan.net or not. It goes on for 2 more pages. Also please note that anyone defending Len Shaner is actually just an alt of Len Shaner. It's how he rolls.
I haven't done any hard core digging really but just like most forums (except maybe Sluthate) it takes a special sort of asshattery to piss off an entire community. These train-centric pages seem exceptionally boring and low drama yet Len manages to get under everyone's skin every time.

I put a touch of thought into this, niche hobbies like this have to be welcoming because really it's not like you can put up the velvet rope to choose who can join (at least the wiser don't) a lot of people who are into the niches are good people but some can be kind of off, in a group of one million 1% jerks doesn't matter much in a group of 100 1% can really stand out.
I can see why in some niche's after seeing a Len they are a bit more nervous to welcome people, even though they desire to grow a fan base so it's a hard line to walk. Also some of the people who get into these are like anyone else who obesses and makes the hobby a hassle, pushing people away.

I once was helping a friend who's a reenactor for ww2 US, they needed some people he often borrowed my carbine to go with his stuff and offered me once. I thought sure why not, I met the Len of the group who promptly pointed out my carbine was re arsnealed in korea era so it shouldn't be there (mind you he never told my friend this he just wanted to pick on the new guy or let me know how smart he was). Event was fine some of us went shooting after he had no problem stuffing his mitts into the big box of loose 30 carbine I made to share with everyone and pointed out if my re loads break his gun it'll cost me.
I've met a Len and guess what for a huge history and shooting junkie like myself I'll never get mixed up in that hobby again

Anyway, just in case anyone was in any doubt about if Len Shaner was actually running Friends Of The Colebrookdale Railroad page I've come with more proof. Because it's interesting, guys, it's interesting how difficult it is to remember to not speak like your fake profile when you're posting as yourself. Especially when you're autistic and insist on signing everything you write like it's some sort of letter (another dead give away of a Shaner profile).
I'm just going to drop this off with a few highlighted parts.
Here's the thing that really makes me laugh about everything this dude does. He's just handing this stuff to me. Not physically of course but everything I find is stuff he links to on his "Conspiracy" pages. Just go HERE and look around and you'll see what I mean unless he starts bawleeting everything.

Lol maybe! Actually I think in this case it was a combination of his lying and getting accused of sexually harassing 2 or 3 younger girls. Probably a little to do with him being a creeper too.
And for taking down all his photos, I have no idea. I don't know anyone who works at the rail road he's trying to smear. Maybe they are just ignoring him? Just from watching his antics he seems like an attention whore. My hope is for someone who actually works there to decide to come on in and talk to us. I'd love to ask them some stuff but since most of them seem pretty old I'm pretty sure this won't happen.
@Bassomatic Holy crap that's totally how Shaner acts. I'm also an avid shooter and having that guy you described hanging around would make it tough to have fun. Did you ever do any more reenacting or did he completely turn you off of it?

I was curious about this too and since it's mind numbingly boring for me to dig through years worth of online train sperging I called my friend up again to see if he knew anything. So here's what he said happened.
The Leonard Shaner Quarry Fiasco
Back in the 90's a huge quarry in Pennsylvania flooded. I think he said it was something like Dyer's or Dire's quarry. It flooded really fast supposedly only taking a day or two. They couldn't get their equipment out including a steam train they were using supposedly. The End.
Or is it? Now it's 2005 and wouldn't you know it someone claims to have seen the roof of a train cab above the water. Who do you suppose it was who saw it but the train worlds resident shit disturber Len Shaner Jr. He starts telling everyone about this because he's an attention whore who, like most cows, wants to be important and respected. Everyone get's excited about this because supposedly this train is quite rare, there's valuable history involved, etc. etc.
Shaner, being himself, starts pretending he knows government officials and then in his infinite stupidity starts making alt accounts of these officials so that he can hold conversations with them. Of course all of these officials are complete fabrications and don't exist. However, everyone's super excited and don't even think to question that Len might be making all of this up.
Things start getting way out of hand. Large amounts of money start to come in as word of the possibility of recovering this train from the bottom of a quarry pond reaches a head. Len, using his fake Park and Recreation Official's accounts, convinces some train group to invest a crap load of money into specialized diving equipment so some diver who was also into trains could go down and see if it was there and if they could get this thing out. Of course diving in this quarry lake would be unreal dangerous because the reason it flooded so fast was because an underwater aquaphor (where you drinking water comes from) had broken through. Basically, if the diver got sucked into that you're never getting him out.
So things are gearing up, people are getting excited for trains, and Shaner's feeling like the big man on campus because his lies are actually working. Then they stop working because all this attention get's around to the Federal Government. Real National Park officials start showing up and start asking who OK'd this project. Everyone refers them to Len Shaner's park official profiles and it's easily discovered by the real officials that all these guys don't exist and are actually Len.
The entire project comes to a screeching halt because of this, obviously, because no one actually had permission to check out this quarry and diving isn't allowed because of how stupidly dangerous it would be. People get real mad at Len, Len nearly gets federal charges, and Len gets banned from numerous rail related things.
