Kindergarten teacher faces backlash over ‘terrible’ off-the-clock behavior: ‘Teachers are people too’

A teacher is wondering if she set a bad example for her students when they caught her drinking wine and swearing while off the clock.
She went on Reddit’s r/AmITheAsshole forum to find out if she had behaved inappropriately. The unexpected incident happened when the teacher was dining at the same restaurant as a couple of her students and their parents. Though she didn’t behave belligerently and wasn’t drunk, the mother overheard her using curse words and saw her drink alcohol.

“Last weekend was my 27th birthday. I went to a restaurant with a couple friends for outdoor dining,” she stated. “While we were there, two moms come in with their children and are seated behind me. I recognize them as students in my in-person class. They say hi to me and I say hi back, but then don’t interact further.”
The teacher had a couple of glasses of wine with her friends and, during dinner, enjoyed a casual conversation that included profanity. She used phrases like “the news is s***” and “it’s too d*** hot to be fall.”

“I’m not speaking loudly or anything. Just having normal conversations with my friends,” she wrote. “One of the moms then comes over to me and reminds me that my students were there and that I shouldn’t be drinking and cursing in front of them. Since I’m their teacher, it was my job to set a good example for them. I just told her I was off the clock and that if it was bothering her, she could move or stop listening to me. She got all huffy and they soon left.”

Days later, the mom went to the teacher’s school and reported her to the principal.
“She was angry and complained that I was setting a bad example for my students,” she said. “And now her daughter was using some of the same words I was using, saying that if her teacher can say it, so can she. He asked for my side of the story and I just explained exactly what happened. Given that she verified my story, he told her that I was not their teacher at the time and since I wasn’t doing anything wrong, they couldn’t control my behavior off the clock. She protested a bit, but eventually left [and] called me a terrible teacher.”

Though the principal took her side, he also suggested that she shouldn’t have drunk alcohol or used foul language that day. Reddit users weighed in.

“They can’t expect you to be the teacher 24/7. Teachers are people, too,” one user commented.

“You are allowed to have a life,” another said. “This mom needs to back the heck off.”

“Why couldn’t the parents move if it was bothering them?” someone wrote.

Why are there so many retarded fucking puritans on this site?
Just because you can niggershitdickcumcunt in a post on this site doesn't mean you should in every post. Like most things in life, there's a time and a place & context matters. If your career is educating and influencing other people's children, and you bump into those children outside of school, maybe act like the influencer you are and be on your best behavior for 30 minutes or so, and relocate. Loudly bleating otherwise just lets everyone around you know how fucking stubborn and smooth-brained you are.

Also, many Chuck-E-Cheese locations serve alcohol.

Lmao. She was under absolutely no obligation to do anything other than what she did. Her behavior wouldn't even be in question if she was anything other than a teacher.

Telling people they have to be on the clock 100% of the time and are disallowed from behaving like a normal fucking person even in appropriate settings is puritan nonsense and needs to be called out for what it is: 1984 social engineering. Nobody should feel like they have to join the Junior Anti-Sex League because of their job.

Adult at a restaurant proclaims to her party “The news is shit” and “It’s too damn hot to be fall.”

Burn the witch.

This was a busybody parent looking to police her kid’s teacher off the clock— just to flex her mommy muscles.

"Oh dearie dearie me! Teacher lady said it's too d-a-m-n hot to be fall! Off the clock even!!! My little boy's poor virgin ears have been defiled by such vulgarity! Hang the trollop!"

Fuck any whining, mewling cunt who thinks this is grounds for discipline, and fuck all the Puritan autists in this thread acting like the teacher was stripping and coming on to her students instead of having drinks and mildly swearing with her friends like a normal adult.

She was admittedly drunk and swearing loud enough that other tables could hear at a restaurant. When somebody approached her to keep it down, she essentially told them to fuck off. Teacher or not, if you're defending that type of behavior then you're a low class nigger who doesn't belong in a civilized society.

Yeah do you have any proof she was behaving that aggressively? The establishment didn't cut or off or intervene, which they are legally required to do in the event of a drunk and disorderly patron. Sounds like it was some fucking whiny bitch Karen sticking her nose where it doesn't belong.

Then remove me from it, faggot.

You won't though, you'll pearl clutch and run your mouth while I am enjoying my freedom. "People" that attempt to curtail reasonable personal freedom should be put against the wall and shot. People that give a fuck what others think should lighten up.

My grandparents had a kegerator in their basement, and me and my cousins used to go to the local beer outlet* with my grandfather all the time. I remember once when I was 7 I was there with my him and my dad and we saw my homeroom teacher in the parking lot and I ran over to her and gave her a big hug. Nobody gave a shit.
Why does anyone care now?

*I remember them having lollipops behind the counter for kids.

Neo-puritanism is hard-core one the rise. It's a combination of the ultra-right trad memesters and ironically from the left as well, where anything that could be construed as a sexual portrayal of women is "demeaning." Combine more trad shit with this with cancel culture safe space nonsense where public places have to be totally and completely devoid of any controversial behavior due to "mental health concerns" or "microaggressions" or whatever you want to call it and we arrive here. It's pretty insane.

Shouldnt have Allowed Corporate to become so powerfull if you wanted something else. They dont treat you like employee but as servant who they own, Thank god for Anonymous voting.
Not a servant. Think lower.
Take money from someone, you are a WHORE.
This is true even everywhere the animal kingdom. Get comfortable with that. By your reply, you will understand it carnally in prison.

Communists are bacteria. Feeding upon the dying, wiped out when their host dies.
Choose your destiny.

People are generally far too foul mouthed, I'm not entirely opposed to using profanity where appropriate but you're probably not a person I want to be around if most of your sentences consist of impotent whining and explitives. If you don't have anything good or meaningful to say, just stop talking, no one needs to hear your voice.
I also don't understand why people feel the need to make work a place to vent and socialise, that's not what work is for. Go to work do your thing and go home (or your workshop or the gym or whatever you do after work), don't hang around.

Its a damn shame I have no respect for teachers anymore.
So cry me a fucking river, you picked this position.
Those who can, do.
Those who cannot, teach.

Also, I thought we weren't supposed to go out AT ALL.
Because "The virus is still raging".
"If the lockdowns just save ONE LIFE, It's all worth it!" "My grandma SHOULDN'T DIE FOR THE ECONOMY"
so which is it?
'drinks after work, socially' or 'Trump killed my grandma by opening the restaurants' ?
I don't understand.

Lets not start acting like this whole thing ever made a lick of god damn sense.

God forbid someone tries to make where they spend a third of their week not shitty by making friends and talking about common interests.

Quit being a fucking autist.
