youtube-dl DMCA'd by the RIAA - RIAA and MPAA are on a mass takedown spree

That was the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft, over a patent on one of their music compression codecs. It elicited the ogg/vorbis project to produce a cleanroom, patent-free codec.
When these dead media wake up and lurch into attack mode they rarely save themselves any money. They usually just kill the standard as it is replaced with a boomer-free version. This is more or less what happened to gif (at least outside of memes).

To be fair to the greed fueled corporate overlords of the RIAA, using copyrighted songs as examples of what you could download was probably the dumbest thing the youtube-dl team could of done. Any software/service even tangentially related to piracy has some big disclaimer that says "THIS IS NOT INTENDED TO BE USED FOR COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT" to cover their ass, even if that's what 99% of their userbase uses it for.

Allah separates sweet water from salt water in the same way he separates FLT from Fairlight.

Having the address is still enough for some skiddies to LOIC it
lol yeah, guessing that a big organization has a vpn subdomain is really high order hacking.

People don't need some retarded Jewish troon to tell them that such a thing exists.

Do it, faggots

Well shit.
youtube-dl is a program I use alot :stress:
it's been that way for a while
I did manage to update it from their website but the -U function is broken so its going to be a song and dance everytime I need to update it. And now all those other installs out there are orphaned.
cool, thanks for the info

Why not just script the update? It needs to be updated decently often if you use it regularly. It's usually once a month it will stop working for some videos or all videos.

Funnily enough I don't think youtube-dl actually is used for piracy as much as it is for just downloading videos people want to either preserve or just watch or listen to offline.
I've used it to download songs but normally I just use it to grab videos that I would expect to be taken down or that are are just generally interesting.
Maybe I'm ignorant but I just think if music is what you're after then there are better ways to get it than youtube, assuming you care about quality at all.
Agree. Most of advanced users that knows what's good usually looks for torrents if they want to download music or movies.
Who the fuck would download music from youtube with shitty quality?, Only if you don't get it anywhere would you do that, or if it is something so special that you truly need to save it, expecting that downloading at 1080p is good enough and the sound isn't fucked.
God, I would even use Spotify and record the music on my pc with Audacity on Stereomix or try to search for a way to download from Spotify.

About movies: except if you don't truly care about bad quality or there's a 1080p movie out there, I don't think it's worth to download it. Who remembers the infamous CamRIP? Because I do.

This, is, BEAUTIFUL
I saw the whole thread, some guy there uploaded youtube-dl.exe to soundcloud with a WAV header.

Also, I need to take note of something
The dmca repo is getting some quality pull requests from concerned citizens
There's a good amount of repos there with hilarious names.

What a nice year to be alive indeed.

I'm getting around to downloading all the vids I had stored in my bookmarks. This was the kick in the pants I needed, I guess...
Add them all to a playlist then just pass the playlist URL or add them all to a text file and point to the text file using I think -b for batch.

edit: not -b is -a
-a inputlist.txt

That's not the incident being referred to. See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recording_Industry_Ass'n_of_America_v._Diamond_Multimedia_Systems,_Inc.

TL;DR: the RIAA literally tried to have one of the earliest MP3 players removed from the market because it wasn't defending copyrights hard enough. Predictably, the RIAA was full of shit.

Thanks, I actually use the input list option already, I was just being a lazy bastard before this. (it's -a inputlist.txt as a command line option, for anyone else who needs it. One vid per line. You may want to use the "skip vids on error" option if you're leaving something to run overnight)
