Unpopular Opinions About Western Animation

Let me explain that matter:
In anime, there's a genre called Magical Girl, popularized by Sailor Moon in the 90's and more since the creator is a woman.
It's episodic and contains more "comedy" than "drama". Generally the plot is about a protagonist being inept in their ordinary life but stronger when the plot calls in. Basically (at least for me) is the "feminism" contrapart of Shonen; not masculine attributes in those characters and being their own.
Star vs. FoE falls in that, and the best part of that is... like Steven's Universe with Utena, they're less appealing than the main influences.
SU is more magical girl/boy subversion that it is another entry in the genre. Star VS definitely plays it straight though which ironically wasn't what Nefcy wanted in the first place IIRC. She wanted Star to just THINK she was a magical princess which personally sounds much more interesting.

Sounds more a ultra-desilusional story about a near-suicidal girl who injects LSD in the nights to fight H. P. Lovercraft monsters.
Yeah, i could see that. But what about SU in this? I have general knowledge about anime since i'm more based about japanese fictional archetypes.

Well long story short, the Crystal Gems are "magical girls" and Steven is the typical "perfect" protag who while seemingly has no flaws is actually carrying a ton of baggage as a result of fixing everyone else's problems. You get hints of this throughout seasons 1-5 and it's addressed explicitly in the epilogue series/season SU Future. So while it seems like shonen or magical girl-esque on the surface thanks to a number of homages and obvious intentional references to series like Utena it's not really of the same ilk as Star VS.

Re Canadian animation and quality
TLDR I think it's because Canadian networks must have at least 50% Canada made TV shows to get funding from the government so Canadian studios will just churn out show after show. Some of them will have clear passion put into them but the vast majority will be done for a quick pay check.
Also, Xaolin Showdown>ATLA.

I think I should just leave it here...

Xiaolin Showdown is a lot of fun, one of the better "macguffin quest" shows.

CN died when the Boston scare happened, CN Real happened, screwed over creators like Craig McCracken, C.H. Greenblatt, Thurop Van Orman, and Maxwell Atoms, and by the time they made safe-manufactured cashgrab like Steven Universe among other things. Sad that the only good things to come out of the era were Uncle Grandpa and Regular Show.

Like I said before, how the mighty have fallen. Seriously, we were this close to getting a full-blown Billy and Mandy spinoff before Atoms got screwed over.

I heard he pitched that as a prank.

Total Drama Island is the best thing Canadian animation has produced in a while.

Now I'm pissed that you didn't like Fillmore, Brandy and Mr. Whiskers, Buzz on Maggie, Replacements, or Fish Hooks. But even then I still do agree.
Can't forget about Dave the Barbarian. Best animated Disney show from the 2000's (aside from Kim Possible) IMO. Rewatched The Buzz on Maggie the other day and I still think it's pretty good. Shame both shows lasted only one season. Haven't watched Brandy and Mr. Whiskers or Replacements in years but I enjoyed them both just as much when I was younger.

I'd argue The Looney Tunes Show was another good show from that era as well. I can see why people didn't enjoy it since it was a departure from classic Looney Tunes (being a sitcom and more dialogue driven), but it had it's moments.

It deserves to be fondly remembered just for this.

TLTS should get a point just for improving Lola Bunny and actually giving her a personality and flaws.

Out of all the criticisms I've seen lobbed at Steven Universe "safe cashgrab" might be the dumbest one. That's a tag you apply to Teen Titans Go, not something with gay relationships that get their funding stripped away.

Yes if the show had scenes that were censored or outright changed in other countries due to morality issues then I wouldn't consider it "safe." It is apparently autistic to imply you don't like TTG but "safe, generic cash cow" is a more accurate descriptor of that show.

The best days of CN were when Adventure Time, Regular Show, Chowder, and Flapjack were all on air. Re: CN Real, I actually liked Destroy Build Destroy, it just should not have been on CN.
