Zuckerberg is saying he was told by someone at the FBI that it was Russian disinfo.
It was brought up here pages back that this sort of feels like a proxy war between the CIA and FBI, and while I have no doubt Facebook would censor this because it hurts Biden, at this point I can't also ignore the idea the FBI would meddle as well. They flat out tried to do it in 2016 and the fake pee tapes. They have sat on the laptop for a year and did nothing.
I really do get a feeling it's true that Biden dropped those 30+ CIA informant names to the CCP and got them killed.
I can see some spooks holding a grudge against Biden but if there was an agency war there’d be more noise. Large bureaucratic organizations like corporations, military branches, and agencies aren’t monolithic even if they are skewed politically and if something that big was happening we should see a lot more leaks, bureaucratic happenings, attempts to defund each other, a lot more autism, etc.
I’m not saying that there aren’t FBI agents trying to screw over Trump or getting in slap fights with the CIA but I don’t think there’s a war because it’d be a lot more autistic, embarrassing, there’d be a lot more leaks, attempts to defund each other, and something this juicy would likely spawn a subforum.
A lot of times people overthink why corporations and governments act and attribute a lot more competence than they deserve. More often than not their behavior can be explained by a political sperg going rogue or something very boring and dumb like “
this will increase our sales,” “we need to spend our budget for this fiscal quarter,” “marketing thought this was a great idea,” or a boomer manager believes the Tumblrina intern would “know how to handle the internets” and is completely perplexed when zer starts a shitstorm online.
People also don’t realize that large bureaucratic organizations make decisions differently, they’re not monolithic but composed of a large number of employees and low level managers. CEOs and executives will delegate most decisions and it often involves boards, groups, IT, HR, and it often takes a long time to decide on anything and they have disagreements on a lot of issues. Also there’s workplace politics so some will strongly support x while others prefer y for career or personal reasons. Furthermore different departments, teams, architectures, will have different interests and often butt heads. Just because some people in the organization are doing x, y, or z it doesn’t mean they’re all on board.
To further complicate things large bureaucratic organizations rely on contractors and subcontractors for most things. The contractors all have different employers (the company or government agency pays the contracting company which in turn pays their employees who act as faces for them). This means that a lot of low level employees
actual employer is some company no one has heard of and their paycheck is coming from someone else entirely. For example, Facebook doesn’t have any moderators they hire a company based in Ireland called Accenture which has an office in Austin Texas. Contractors will have agreements but they often have a lot of lattitude in how they perform their job, and the contracting company will often make a lot of calls. Another example is Edward Snowden, whose actual employer was not the government but a company that had won a contract with the government. These contractors will have their own cultures, usually influenced by the country/state/city their HQ is based in, have their own political inclinations, their own interests, and some really hate each other because they’re competitors.
The biggest story imo is the censorship itself. Facebook and Twitter crossed the Rubicon. If they succeed they’ll learn this works and they’ll start manipulating other nations and elections, especially in places that tech has interests like Ireland, Lisbon, etc. If they lose the Republicans will have no choice but to try to regulate, break them up, dominate, or curb their influence because the social media companies will believe they didn’t go far enough. The reason they’re going all in on Biden is because they believe Trump will hurt their bottom line and curb their influence. If it was just a favor or political pressure they’d do a half assed job.
