SU is more magical girl/boy subversion that it is another entry in the genre. Star VS definitely plays it straight though which ironically wasn't what Nefcy wanted in the first place IIRC. She wanted Star to just THINK she was a magical princess which personally sounds much more interesting.Let me explain that matter:
In anime, there's a genre called Magical Girl, popularized by Sailor Moon in the 90's and more since the creator is a woman.
It's episodic and contains more "comedy" than "drama". Generally the plot is about a protagonist being inept in their ordinary life but stronger when the plot calls in. Basically (at least for me) is the "feminism" contrapart of Shonen; not masculine attributes in those characters and being their own.
Star vs. FoE falls in that, and the best part of that is... like Steven's Universe with Utena, they're less appealing than the main influences.
