Your profile says that you live in New England; that doesn't tell me too much about your sepcific location, but if you're close to NYC you can go to the GG meetup that will be there on August 1st. I also see that GG-supporters in the Phillipines are planning to have their own meetup, though nothing is certein at this point. I think that I speak for all of us by expressing hope that our very own @homerbeoulve will attend.

They're not likely to just walk around going I AM SO GAMERGATE, you know. I'm admittedly pro-GG and though the subject came up a few times when I was at a Kiwi meetup, it hardly dominated the proverbial conversation.

Unless someone brings up the topic, I am not going to say anything. I'll ask for the individuals opinion first to gauge how...passionate they are. I made a mistake of saying, 'Well, there is two sides of a story" one time and had someone jump down my throat. To be fair, it was at a female tech meeting get together and they were feminists. I was still neutral towards gamergate and still trying to understand what is going on at the time. When I explained my concern was the state of journalism in gaming they backed down.

I was shocked at the reaction of making even a neutral comment about gamergate and the concept of not listening to both sides of a story seems wrong. Truth should always hold up to scrutiny and everyone deserves a chance to speak in their own defense. Even Nick Bate deserves his time in court before being being (legally) condemned with all the evidence on the table for evaluation.

I am not going to go onto my soap box this time so I am going to make this short. One of the ladies thought it was wrong that there was two sides of a story when it comes to harassment because there is no excuse for harassment. However, if we don't listen to the "harassers" how do we know if the accused is really harassing someone? How are we going to clear up confusion if we don't listen to each other? One little piece of information can change everything.

To be quite honest, I have never heard of the term "MRA" being used prior to any of this issue. Not once, and if you'd told me what they were, I would have lumped them in with the same dumbasses from the Flat Earth Society.

Now, the feminism/SJW thing is something I've actually heard rumblings about before GG, and it was a relative topic of conversation in the normal locale (i,e: a college). IIRC, the "MRA" narrative for the portrayal of GG was used rather heavily in Australian mainstream and social media more than others.

If I were to hazard a guess, you - or at least those you talk with - seem to have issues separating the different participants of this particular issue.

It is not unreasonable to demand ethics and fair coverage in gaming journalism - that's what they're paid for, and most other industries will run you out for shirking from either.

Also, it is not unreasonable to ask for more diverse representation for games to which they are relevant.

However, there are plenty of people that exist outside of these two main arguments. There are people who don't give a shit about either and want a lot of money and attention through creating controversy (Sarkheesian/Wu), there are some who want to continue being unethical without being watched (Quinn/Kotaku/Gawker), there are genuine extremists such as MRAs, #KillAllMen, people-who-would-love-to-have-you-believe-that-GG-is-responsible-for-all-the-atrocities-of-the-world, and vice versa (MKX clothes are not skimpy, triggered), and there are those who want everything censored and have debates abolished altogether.

The important part is distinguishing between these various layers of asshattery and understanding that neither core concept is stupid, only the people that behave like faggots in relation to them.
