"nii nii" is cute slang/infantization of the word "brother". The way it was translated was appropriate considering the context.
No it's not. The main problem is that "Big Brudder" looks fucking stupid to read. Unless the character is gonna continue talking in dumb baby talk in the translation then "Big Brudder" is just gonna stick out even more. A translator has done their job well if they are invisible to the audience. Given the amount of blowback this single line has gotten they have absolutely failed at appropriately translating the line. They could have used something like "Bro bro" which doesn't look stupid and is common enough to be in shit like Gravity Falls. Literally anything would have been better than a fucking Strongbad joke.

It was strange, but to most of the world, except gamergate folks, gamergate is a bad thing.
The problem with the line was two fold. One, it's literally wrong. The line is about addressing your superiors politely.

The logic I've seen defending it is that most American viewers would not understand this. Of course this ignores any other English speakers who might view this or any other translators who might use the English Dub script as a basis for translation. Nor do I think it's this ultra foreign concept for Americans but let's go with that reasoning. Well that leads into the second problem, Gamergate is something the vast majority of people don't know nor care about it. You're talking about "most of the world" but most of the world doesn't have a clue what the fuck gamergay even is. It's literally wrong, wholly inappropriate and was an out of date reference already at the time it came out.

It's Higurashi, "Nii-Nii" has been kept intact throughout its localizing history including the dub (although watch FUNimation change it because they hate anime fans). It's practically synonymous with Satoko's character that she calls her big brother that. I don't think fans would've really minded the subs all that much if it was "big bro" instead of the retarded-sounding "big brudder" and the subtitler's egotistical tirade about why she did it.
And you have a right to have that opinion. And maybe the "tirade" was in response to the wave of harassment she got over it? I keep getting told to "be nice" to Manning because he's had "a rough time". So if the subtitler is having a rough time due to a harassment campaign, they aren't allowed to be snippy? "Big Brudder" was definitely a choice, but it is infantized slang for "big brother" which is what "nii nii" is. It isn't really that out of place/unusual of a choice.

And my point exactly. It wasn't a horrible fit in the context of the series. It only seemed to upset gamergate folk. And you're right, it is out of date. You guys moved onto anime instead of gaming then came here to an echo chamber.

She wasn't getting harassed over it until she butted in with a condescending "ACKSHUALLY". Had she kept her mouth shut, it would've blown over by the weekend and become an in-joke with the fanbase.

I'm gonna give the benefit of the doubt that you just struggle with the basics of forum posting and have taken the liberty of splitting these sets of sentences. I assume these are meant to be separate responses to the two parts of my posts.

Anyway, no, that wasn't my point at all. It's a horrible fit because Satoko has perfect diction in the English translation besides "Big Brudder". While "Nii-nii" can be seen as baby talk, it is not wrong on the level as 'brudder' is compared to 'brother'. She isn't mispronouncing anything, she's just saying big brother twice in a row. You could have even kept it "Nii-nii" because another character literally explains that it is what Satoko calls her big brother. Even if no one picked up on it, it's explained in the literal show.

It only seemed to upset gamergate folk. And you're right, it is out of date. You guys moved onto anime instead of gaming then came here to an echo chamber.
It upset plenty of people. Was Funimation's audience full of gamergate people that they had to change the line for home video releases cause the backlash was that strong? No, it's clear that you're just trolling given the rest of your responses. So I'm just gonna go ahead and ignore the rest of this post as well as all of your future ones.

You do you fam. They fit in the context. You're just big mad. If you have such a problem with the direction of anime, a great idea would be to learn the language and get a job as a translator <3 Remember that anyone that disagrees with you is "trolling".

It was strange, but to most of the world, except gamergate folks, gamergate is a bad thing.

From re-reviewing the clip, part of the whole premise of the show is in the female characters demeaning and abusing the male characters. Insulting a character like that is pretty fitting with the atmosphere of the show. It was a unique choice, but it wasn't totally out of place.

-We had an entire world war against fascism. You would think that people would remember this. These seem like right wing incel issues and not issues that affect you know the majority of the viewership. A vocal minority hasn't tanked them yet
Ignoring the issue of the rightness or wrongness of gamergate, it's not the localizer's job to make that call. Translate the source material as faithfully as possible, only swapping out cultural references when there's no other way to make it work, like the Spiderman reference in Shield Hero.

Don't thrust in cute political references to own the incels or whatever.

Strange. Could have said the same thing about Vic~
@Captain Manning was right. Our ebola-ridden Orguss man was right. lmao

He did keep his mouth shut. He tried. He tried apologizing and moving on. Nothing worked. His whole life was burning at Twitter speed (quote from an actual lawyer he consulted).
Don't bother. Only one brand of people concern troll with that tired old argument.

"They fit in the context" no they don't, translating to Dub should only be translating or making jokes work in english, but not in american context. Dubbing work isn't supposed to be creating anything new, just translating a work as faithfully as possible.
How do I not make images not look retarded? New UI is kinda dumb with pictures.

Funimation fuckery with Dubs

I hope this "DrHaste" weirdo is Two-Ton Tewson.
How they talk reminds me of the fat blue whale, but really they all talk in similar autistic ways. Def not two ton though, not enough asking questions of things already answered or asking what one word means for no reason, other then to get off the point of the conversation.

Also why are Lawtwatter orbiters so good at double posting? lol

What is with your weird obsession of wanting Tewson to join The Farms?
Something something craziest of the lawtwitter orbiters something something lolcow worthy. Seriously anyone who has two different sockpuppets which are just varying tiers of dropping any form of faux civil discussion is lolcow worthy.

Their job is what they were hired to do, which these scripts get approved higher up. So doesn't really matter what you think their job is. You can have an OPINION of what their job is, but that doesn't change anything~

I love being called a troll on a site dedicated to trolling

That is exactly what their job is....

So are you a higher up Funimation then? So you can say what their job is but we here cant? Yours is the truth, ours is just an opinion, god what fucking retard Lawtwatter larper are you? Cause localizing isn't bringing unrelated politics into a show not related to the patriarchy or gamergaters or anything else, keep shit to the show and context of the show. Not irl outside shit Japan doesn't care about.

Seems someone is butthurt that they were called out in an anime as a bad person.

Great to see you call everyone that disagrees with you "lawtwitter". "lawtwitter" is literally random lawyers on Twitter. The fact that they rarely agree on anything but almost all agreed that this case was a steaming pile should have been a sign. Not being a lawyer means not being lawtwitter.~

What? Why the fuck would I care about what an anime actually says, the dubs aren't what are actually said in Japanese at all, even if they were properly localized. Which Funimation does just not all the time and is doing it less and less all the time.

Lawtwatter/KV, no difference really.

Probably to see her break.

If I had to say, they are probably DMing as we speak talking about how they are "dunking" the farms with their "smart" talk.

It's funny how people seem to not think that and just believe that whatever they force in to be perfect and look for any reason to justify it. I think another perfect example is that Dragon maid anime, sorry I don't have an image on that. If anyone can defend that then you know how idiotic they are.

Not knowing the difference says a lot about the case and it's lack of merit if over 100 lawyers from vastly different backgrounds, ideations, and specialties all agreed on this case. You may say they're always wrong, but they strangely were right about the 0-17.

I'm outie. Gotta work. Have fun with the failed appeals bb <3 You can quote me on that.
