Seth MacFarlane to Reboot ‘Revenge of the Nerds’ With the Lucas Brothers (EXCLUSIVE)

Seth MacFarlane is reviving the age old rivalry between jocks and nerds. The comedic actor is developing a reboot of the seminal ’80s comedy “Revenge of the Nerds” at 20th Century Studios.

Keith and Kenny Lucas, identical twin brothers best known for their scene-stealing roles in “22 Jump Street,” are set to write and star in the film. They are co-writing the script with Alex Rubens (“The Twilight Zone,” “Key and Peele,” “Rick and Morty”). MacFarlane will produce the reboot through his production company Fuzzy Door, along with Erica Huggins, who brought the project to the Lucas brothers and is spearheading development.

The upcoming version won’t be a remake of the 1984 comedy, which hasn’t aged all that well and has been criticized in recent years for depictions of rape. Instead, the contemporary reimagining will pontificate about today’s nerd culture and what even constitutes a geek in the 21st century.

Jeff Kanew directed the original “Revenge of the Nerds,” which starred Robert Carradine, Anthony Edwards, Ted McGinley and Bernie Casey. The raunchy comedy followed a group of college nerds who spar with the jock fraternity the Alpha Betas.

That film spawned multiple sequels, including 1987’s “Revenge of the Nerds II: Nerds in Paradise” and the TV movies, 1992’s “The Next Generation” and 1994’s “Nerds in Love.” 20th Century Fox attempted to remake the original movie in 2006 with Adam Brody, Dan Byrd and Kristin Cavallari. But the studio ultimately called off the project after two weeks of production.

The Lucas brothers are currently working on a comedy at Universal with Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who directed “22 Jump Street.” They also co-wrote and co-produced the upcoming film “Judas and the Black Messiah,” a drama starring Daniel Kaluuya and Lakeith Stanfield about the assassination of Black Panther Party leader Fred Hampton.

Keith and Kenny Lucas are repped by Avi Gilbert at Fourth Wall Management, UTA, and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller, Hoberman, Newman, Warren, Richman, Rush, Kaller & Gellman.
Rubens is repped by Jon Huddle at Fourth Wall Management, UTA, and Morris, Yorn, Barnes, Levine, Krintzman, Rubenstein, Kohner & Gellman LLP.

Revenge of the Nerds at one point was a niche movie even with the added popularity they had many years later. The reboot will just be a “Big Bang Theory/Young Sheldon” type movie that removes the essence of what made that move a cult favorite.
As long it's not a shitfest like Ghostnutt oops I mean Ghostbusters 2016, we don't know what route it'll take.

"Films for the boys" like Animal House and Weird Science are exactly the kind of things pc culture targets, so any remake of them will ride on name recognition even more than other remakes.

I remember Weird Science being actually sweet but I haven't seen it in years

The Lucas Brothers were funny in 22 Jump Street, but I don't trust reboots now.

Now I realized that 21 Jump Street was an adoption/reboot of the show, 21 Jump Street, so...

Well, now reboots are getting crappier because of current culture.

So... if the movie won't be a remake then why the fuck call it Revenge of the Nerds?
Oh yeah, because brand recognition.
To be fair, they couldn't remake the original in modern setting because jocks don't really exist anymore, as far as I know.
You get kicked out of the university for doing a fraction of what the Alpha Betas did in the original, even if your dad is rich.
Very often, it's the "nerds" who are the bullies who will make false accusations and try to get you kicked out.
It would be a nice twist if the athletes were the protagonists targeted by asshole nerdy kids but that's not something that Hollywood will do.

Based on the people involved, I assume that this will be a stoner comedy full of improv and pop culture references.
Fuck that shit.
