Chris is not evil. He has left the BSAA and went rogue. He's trying to find and kill the main villain of the game, a woman with morphing abilities. Chris has been hunting her for three years, she's extremely dangerous, and the methods he's taking to take her down is something the BSAA would never approve of. At the beginning of the game, the person he shoots isn't Mia, it's this person. Also, you play the entire later half of the game as Chris.
You play as Ethan during the first half of the game. He's then confronted by the main villain and his fate is unknown while we play as Chris. You retake control of Ethan for the final boss. He dies during the battle and ask Chris to take care of his daugther named Rose.
Mia's fate is very obscure, with contradictory infos which make it seems that her fate is tied to a choice. She's been captured by Miranda before the start of the game so she's not the one who gets shot by Chris. There is a cutscene named "Chris and Mia escape by Helicopter" but she's totally absent from the ending of the game.
She's not Alex like most people think. Her name is Miranda and she's seemingly connected to Eveline and the Mold from RE7. She can change her appareance and transform into a huge molded dragon-like monster at the end.
Her name is Rose and she's apparently/supposedly the reincarnation of Eveline. Miranda disguised herself as Mia to try to steal her but got shot by Chris. Later, she was able to steal her from Chris. The village treats Rose as some kind of godess.
Chris decides to retire, in order to be able to properly raise Rose as his surrogate daugther. There is a huge time skip, between 15 to 20 years. It's the late 2030s. Rose is an adult, Chris is an old man, She's visiting Ethan's grave when an agent parks nearby and she goes to him as they have a job for her. The agent jokingly calls her Eveline which makes her very angry. She then use some Wesker-style martial art against the agent before threatening him to not call her like that or she'll use a "technique/power" that even Chris doesn't even know about.
Also, apparently a Dev build was leaked

Wow, this is retarded as hell. Thats how Chris's story ends? This is just boring as fuck and unsatisfying as hell. Even Silent Hill stopped when their games turned into this kind of shit tier awful.

I mean Chris growing to old to do shit anymore was bound to happen sooner or later. Same with every other Resident Evil protagonist. That's what happens when you have a series where every character ages in real time, and the timeline moves forward with every year a new game is released. The only way they could conceivably keep realistically using the same characters over and over again would be to a) reboot the entire series from the start and work from there; or b) come up with a similar bullshit excuse that Soulcalibur did with half the cast finding some bullshit way to stop aging for whatever reason.

Considering that in Capcoms eyes pretty much all the legacy RE cast of characters are Ken and Barbie dolls who have no sexual relationships much less character development and have regularly pull character moments out their ass since RE5 it just gets dumber every game because theres no character arc or direction for anyone.

Suddenly having Chris say "ok, me pappy now cause Ethan died" feels dumb because theres never been any build up in any other games to Chris being anything but a Ken doll on rhoids. Crapcom needs to stop hiring crap writers and making crap choices. They've thrown away all their remaining legacy characters and never really given anyone a proper build up before the send off.

Also this games fucking story sounds like they were pretty much copying Silent Hill 3s homework.

You have a point. I went into this more in the actual RE Thread, but it has always been baffling that these character have no love lives, no sex lives, no personal lives at all outside of their jobs as monster slayers that we can see. I mean, most of the cast in their 40s or their 30s pushing their 40s, yet none of these women have thought about settling down and having families? They are fast approaching menopause and the age range that would make it harder for them to have kids. Have literally none of them found lives outside of just running across the world and slaying wannabe Umbrella Organizations?

Oddly enough, the only one who came closest to finding a life outside of fighting Umbrella knock-offs would be Claire Redfield and Barry Burton. Granted, Barry was already established as having a family of his own since RE1.

Aside from her TerraSave activism, Claire seems to have the most normal life out of all of them and that's why she wasn't in any major games after Code Veronica until Revelations 2.
